South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: June 4-7
Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from performance workshops and family festivals, to unusual creatures and a special LGBT trolly tour, you won’t have to go far for fun. Below are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood.

Women’s Roles: Two Interactive Workshops With Performer Heather Harpham
When: Thursday, June 4, 6-7:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Join writer and performer Heather Harpham at the Park Slope Library Thursday for an interactive performance workshop that “makes women’s historical, contemporary, and evolving social roles come to life.” Adults are welcome and encouraged to participate.
How much: Free.
CasHank Hootenanny Jamboree
When: Thursday, June 4, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Street
What: Ready for a down-home good time? Host Alex Battles leads an acoustic country jam session over at Freddy’s. Bring your fiddles, banjoes, washboards, and spoons to play along!
How much: Free.
Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, June 5, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.
Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, June 5, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: If you and the girls just want to have fun, show your love for Lauper this Friday at Lakeside, where Dreamland Roller Disco is all about ’80s pop queens. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).
Coffee Bark
When: Saturday, June 6, 7am-9am
Where: Meadow beside the Picnic House in Prospect Park (Enter at PPW and 3rd Street)
What: It’s the first Saturday of the month, which can only mean one thing – Coffee Bark with FIDO. There will be treats for dogs (and their owners), as well as information on off-leash activities.
How much: Free.
PS 124 Spring Festival
When: Saturday, June 6, 11am-3pm
Where: 13th Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues
What: Party with the gang at PS 124, as they welcome neighbors to their annual spring festival. 13th Street (between 4th and 5th Avenues) will have fun activities for the whole family, including bounce houses, an obstacle course, carnival games, tasty food, and more. Best of all, the block will be closed to traffic, so kids are invited to bring their scooters and bikes. For more information, visit the PS 124 website.
How much: Free Admission. Tickets for bounce houses and games are $1 each, $10 for 12, or $20 for 25. Families can also purchase a wristband for $30 that gives kids unlimited access to all activities.
History In Your Hands: Flax To Linen
When: Saturdays and Sundays in June, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Did you know that Lefferts House has a flax crop? This month, the whole family is invited to come and give the tools used to process flax fibers into linen cloth a try. Kids can also sew a small linen pouch to take home.
How much: $3 suggested donation
Celebrate Brooklyn: Creole For Kidz!
When: Saturday, June 6, 4pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: New Orleans-based accordionist, singer, and educator brings a “touch of the bayou” to the Ezra Jack Keats Family Concert. The day will include readings from children’s book author Dan Zanes, complete with video projections.
How much: Free!
Songs For Unusual Creatures
When: Saturday, June 6, 4pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street
What: Quirky author and composer Michael Hearst, along with his five-piece band, presents Songs For Unusual Creatures: a highly-geeky A/V presentation of some of the most bizarre animals that roam the planet. The creatures are brought to life with such odd-ball instruments as theremin, claviola, and stylophone.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation
Food Truck Rally
When: Sunday, June 7, 11am-5pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: Have the munchies? Stop by Prospect Park on Sunday, and nosh on goodies from some of the city’s best food trucks.
Gay Green-Wood Trolly Tour
When: Sunday, June 7, 1-3pm
Where: Green-Wood Cemetery, 25th Street and 5th Avenue
What: Brooklyn Pride Week is here, and Green-Wood is kicking things off with a special trolly tour. Guide Phil Desiere will introduce guests to some of the cemetery’s permanent residents that were either openly gay, or influenced the LGBT community.
How Much: $15 for Green-Wood or Brooklyn Historical Society members/$20 for nonmembers.
