South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: June 18-21

Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from books talks and Madonna, to sharks and music in the street, you won’t have to go far for fun. Below are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood.

BOOKISH: Writers Talking
When: Thursday, June 18, 6-8pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Join Kensington novelist Amy Shearn as she hosts a brand new interview series at the Park Slope Library. This week, author Amy Sohn is on hand to talk about her new novel, The Actress, just released in paperback. Books will be available for purchase.  
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, June 19, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

New York Philharmonic: Parks 50
When: Friday, June 19, 6:30-10pm
Where: Long Meadow Ballfields, Prospect Park
What: Join the New York Philharmonic to celebrate their 50th summer of free outdoor programming. Charles Dutoit leads the Orchestra in Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture; Saint-Saëns’s Violin Concerto No. 3, with Renaud Capuçon as soloist; Stravinsky’s Petrushka (1911 version); and Ravel’s La Valse. The Brooklyn Interdenominational Choir will open the night as part of Share the Stage, a program that invites local musicians to play before the Philharmonic performance in their home boroughs. The performance will be followed by fireworks.

Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, June 19, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: There’s no doubt that we’re living in a material world, so if you’re a material girl (or guy), the only place you need to be this Friday is Lakeside, where Dreamland Roller Disco is all about Madonna. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).

Music Night at Roots
When: Friday, June 19, 7:30-11pm
Where: Roots Cafe, 639 5th Avenue, between 18th and 19th Streets
What: The monthly music series at Roots brings together an impressive lineup on Friday night! Look for performances from Your Friend, Kimi; Trisha Ivy Horst and Amanda Simpson Neill; and Coco and the Greek. Hosted by Gypsy George Mihalopoulos.
How much: Free.

Mysteries Of The Deep: Sharks!
When: Saturday, June 20, 1-2pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Get up close and personal with the infamous predators of the deep on Saturday, when the New York Aquarium presents Mysteries of the Deep: Sharks. This interactive program, geared toward kids ages 6-9, includes trivia, shark artifacts, and more. Note that the presentation is limited to 35 participants, so make sure to get their early.
How much: Free.

Flax to Linen
When: Saturdays and Sundays in June, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Did you know that Lefferts House has a flax crop? This month, the whole family is invited to come and give the tools used to process flax fibers into linen cloth a try. Kids can also sew a small linen pouch to take home.
How much: $3 suggested donation

Celebrate Brooklyn!: DanceBrazil
When: Saturday, June 20, 7:30-10:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: The dancers in artistic director Jelon Vieira’s DanceBrazil “glow enthusiastically as they let rip at highest energy,” fusing contemporary movement with the dance/martial arts form of capoeira.
How much: Free.

Make Music New York
When: Sunday, June 21
Where: Various locations
What: See free live music right on the street, right in our neighborhood! Check out bands and performers at Freddy’s, Windsor World of Shoes, The Monro, and more. For a complete map of performances, visit the Make Music New York website.
