South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight July 30 – August 2

The last week of July is here, and it’s going to be another hot one. If you’re hanging around the Slope and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from disco divas and a multi-screen art instillation, to rowboats and adoptable pets. Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:

Fresh Air Yoga
When: Thursday, July 30, 7pm
Where: Long Meadow, Prospect Park
What: Get your yoga on in the Park with a free open-level outdoor class every Thursday night. This week, the class is taught by Jyll Hubbard Salk from Urban Asanas.
How much: Free.

Celebrate Brooklyn!: Clifford Ross & The Orchestra Of St. Luke’s
When: Thursday, July 30, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: Don’t let this evening’s damp forecast keep you away from a multi-screen and site specific art instillation by artist Clifford Ross, with musical accompaniment from the Orchestra of St. Lukes.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, July 31, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Chess Club For All Ages
When: Friday, July 31, 3-4:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Families are invited to play chess in the auditorium of the Park Slope library this summer. All skill levels are welcome, so whether your a newbie or a pro, come get your game on!
How much: Free.

Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, July 31, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: If our friends at Dreamland have anything to say about it, disco will never die, so bust out your best ’70s fashion, because this Friday is all about those glorious disco divas. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).

Celebrate Brooklyn!: Big K.R.I.T.
When: Friday, July 31, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: Big K.R.I.T. will make sure the bandshell “shines like a supernova” this Friday, when the rapper hits the Celebrate Brooklyn! stage.
How much: Free.

Coffee Bark
When: Saturday, August 1, 7am-9am
Where: Meadow beside the Picnic House in Prospect Park (Enter at PPW and 3rd Street)
What: Fido’s popular Coffee Bark returns to Prospect Park on Saturday. There will be treats for dogs (and their owners), as well as information on off-leash activities.
How much: Free.

Adoptapalooza
When: Saturday, August 1, 11am-5pm
Where: Bartel Pritchard Square, 15th Street and PPW, Prospect Park
What: Give a furry pal a home this weekend, when the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals hosts Adoptapalooza. There will be over 150 pets to choose from, including a number of friends from local favorite Sean Casey Animal Rescue. In addition to giving a loving pet their forever home, folks can purchase a dog license, learn how to prepare for a pet emergency, take home free pet goodies, and more. Row, Row, Row Your Boat In Prospect Park
When: Saturday, August 1, 12-4pm
Where: Boat ramp on Wellhouse Drive, Prospect Park
What: Grab an oar and spend a lovely Saturday rowing around the lake in Prospect Park. Boats are available on a first come, first serve basis (no reservations are accepted), and life jackets are provided.
How much: Free.

Macy’s Family Fishing And Bird Watching Clinic
When: Saturdays & Sundays in August, 12-6pm
Where: North End of Esplanade, Prospect Park
What: This month, from 1-4pm kids under the age of 15 can learn all about aquatic ecology, fishing safety, and how to collect bait. Afterward, from 4:30-6pm, families are invited to go bird watching. Note that this event is first come, first serve, so be sure to arrive early.
How much: Free.

Historic Games
When: Saturdays and Sundays in August, 2-5pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Have the kids ever played 9-Man Morris? Well, they’ll learn how by making their own board, which they can take home to continue playing. That’s not all! Look for checkers, historic hoop games, and stilts.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Peter Pan and the Pirates
When: Saturday, August 1, 3 and 4pm
Where: Zucker Natural Exploration Area, Prospect Park
What: Fly off to Neverland with the family this Saturday, as Peter Pan, with the help of Princess Tiger Lilly and the Lost Boys, take on Captain Hook, in an immersive dance theatre production at Prospect Park’s Zucker Natural Exploration Area. For more information, visit the Eva Dean Dance website.

Celebrate Brooklyn!: Taylor Mac Presents The 20th Century Abridged
When: Saturday, August 1, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: Join performer Taylor Mac, as he leads the Celebrate Brooklyn! audience on an “outrageously entertaining romp through 100 years of culture as seen through songs that range from Tin Pan Alley to the birth of rock ‘n’ roll to disco and beyond.”
How much: Free.

Food Truck Rally
When: Sunday, August 2, 11am-5pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: Have the munchies? Stop by Prospect Park on Sunday, and nosh on goodies from some of the city’s best food trucks.
