South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: July 17-20

Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from the return of South Slope Summer Strolls, to science projects at the library, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here’s some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:

Animal Encounter
When: Thursdays and Fridays, 3-4pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Want to learn more about the animals at Prospect Park’s Audubon Center? Whether getting to know Snappy the Turtle, watching a snake eat a mouse, or actually taking part in a feeding, kids are sure to have an absolute blast.
How much: Free.

Celebrate Brooklyn: Shen Wei Dance Arts
When: Thursday, July 17, 8pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th Street and Prospect Park West
What: Internationally celebrated choreographer, dancer, director, painter, and designer Shen Wei’s troupe takes the Celebrate Brooklyn stage on Friday with a dance spectacular. The evening’s performance will feature two of his repertory works, Map and Collective Measures.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, July 18, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

South Slope Summer Stroll
When: Friday, July 18, 5-9pm
Where: 5th Avenue, between 12th and 18th Streets
What: It’s back! Last year’s popular South Slope Summer Stroll, which transforms busy Fifth Avenue into a giant block party, kicks off this Friday. Look for live music, a climbing wall, vintage cars, fun and games from Puppetry Arts, The Gowanus Circus, food, drinks, and more.
How much: Free.

Doggie Fashion Show
When: Friday, July 18, 6:30pm until it’s over
Where: 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: The only place you really need to be on Friday at 6:30pm is Freddy’s, where the neighborhood’s cutest dogs will compete in the bar’s first ever doggie fashion show. Think your pooch has got the moves for the cat-walk? Hopeful models can either arrive early and ask for info at Freddy’s, or email freddys@freddysbar.com for details and an entry form.
How much: Free.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat In Prospect Park
When: Saturday, July 19, 12-4pm
Where: Boat ramp on Wellhouse Drive, Prospect Park
What: Grab an oar and spend a lovely Saturday rowing around the lake in Prospect Park. Boats are available on a first come, first serve basis (no reservations are accepted), and life jackets are provided.
How much: Free.

Summer Science Club
When: Saturday, July 19, 1-3pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Join the gang at the Park Slope Library on Saturday for science crafts and activities. Geared toward children ages 2 and older.
How much: Free.

History In Your Hands: Farm & Yard Work
When: Saturdays in July, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Don’t have a yard of your own to work on? Come out to Prospect Park and help the gang at Lefferts House take care of their garden. Families will pitch in with the potato farm plot, medicinal and cooking herb gardens, and berry patches by pulling weeds and helping to water them. Be sure to bring some water and a hat. All gardening tools will be provided.
How much: $3 suggested donation

Celebrate Brooklyn: Deltron 3030 And Nomadic Massive
When: Saturday, July 19, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th Street and Prospect Park West
What: Get ready to revel in the adventures of Deltron 3030 and the “multi-lingual eruption of old school hip-hop with live instrumentation and a deeply global vibe” that is Nomadic Massive on Saturday, because it’s all about hip hop at Celebrate Brooklyn.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Food Truck Rally
When: Sunday, July 20, 11am-5pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: Have the munchies? Stop by Prospect Park on Sunday — the food trucks are back!

History In Your Hands: Summer Songs and Stories
When: Sunday, July 20, 2 & 3pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Enjoy stories from around the world under the big tree at Lefferts House with storyteller and musician Tammy Hall.
How much: $3 suggested donation
