South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: February 5-8
Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from trivia to Michigan-themed opera and beer to improv, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:
Trivial Dispute
When: Thursday, February 5, 9pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue
What: Take off your knit cap and put on your thinking cap for a few rounds of trivia! Big prizes and bragging rights await the winner.
How much: No cover.
Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, February 6, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.
Opera On Tap: New Brew Goes To Michigan
When: Friday, February 6, 8pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: New Brew will share their love of the Wolverine State with a program of music from, about, or related to the Great State of Michigan, featuring selections by their very own Christopher Berg, William Bolcom, William Flanagan, Irving Berlin, and many more. Michigan’s Bell’s Brewery will be on hand with discounted drink offerings and other fun goodies throughout the show.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.
Coffee Bark
When: Saturday, February 7, 7-9am
Where: Meadow beside the Picnic House in Prospect Park (Enter at PPW and 3rd Street)
What: It’s the first Saturday of the month, which can only mean one thing…Coffee Bark with FIDO. There will be treats for dogs (and their owners), as well as information on off-leash activities.
How much: Free.
Introduction To Birdwatching
When: Saturday, February 7, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Take a tour from the Brooklyn Bird Club to learn about the 250 species of birds that call Prospect Park home.
How much: Free.
Family Read Aloud
When: Saturday, February 7, 3pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: It’s Take Your Child to the Library Week, so bring the kids down on a chilly afternoon and curl up with a few great books!
How much: Free.
Songs For Unusual Creatures
When: Saturday, February 7, 4pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Quirky author and composer Michael Hearst, along with his five-piece band, presents Songs For Unusual Creatures: a highly-geeky A/V presentation of some of the most bizarre animals that roam the planet. Featuring: Michael Hearst, Ben Holmes, Allyssa Lamb, Kristin Mueller, and Jonti Siman. Fun for the whole family!
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.
Nature Playtime: Zoo
When: Sunday, February 8, 10:30am-12:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Zoo, 450 Flatbush Avenue
What: The Prospect Park Alliance, Prospect Park Zoo, and Tinkergarten are teaming up (with a little help from the Disney Conservation Fund) to bring families creative play opportunities in the park’s natural areas. Every Sunday through April, those visiting the Prospect Park Zoo will be able to take part in Nature Playtime! in the native plant garden. Look for nature-inspired art, insect observation, playing with snow, scavenger hunts, and more. Want to try some Nature Playtime activities on your own? Download a free activity card here. Back Room Brawl
When: Sunday, February 8, 7pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Every second Sunday of the month, improv takes over the back room at Freddy’s. Hosted by Jackson Helms.
