South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: February 26-March 1

Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from ukuleles and gypsy swing to pet adoptions and an art fundraiser for City Harvest, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:

Ukulele Night
When: Thursday, February 26, 7:30pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets
What: It’s time for Freddy’s monthly uke jam. Host Katie Down (aka Genevieve of The Ukuladies) welcomes any and all ukulele players to “join, play and sing in the atmosphere of friends singing songs, sharing playing tips, and generally having fun with the most friendly instrument in world!”
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, February 27, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Kente Cloth Craft Program
When: Friday, February 27, 3:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: The Park Slope Library is continuing their Black History Month celebration with a craft project for kids in grades K through 6 on Friday. The group will make a kente cloth based on the book, The Spider Weaver: A Legend of Kente Cloth by Margaret Musgrove. No reservation is required.
How much: Free.

Personality Crisis
When: Friday, February 27, 10pm
Where: Supercollider, 4th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Street
What: Twig the Wonderkid and Friends will “spin glamorous rock n roll and New York gutter punk” at Supercollider on Friday. The event is 21 and up only, so make sure you bring an ID with you.
How much: Free.

Sean Casey Pet Adoption Event
When: Saturday, February 28, 12pm to 5pm
Where: Alison Animal Hospital, 224 Prospect Park West, between Windsor Place and 16th Street
What: Come meet a new friend at Alison Animal Clinic this weekend, when the veterinary office joins forces with Sean Casey Animal Rescue to find homes for some adorable neighborhood cats and dogs.

Love, Food, Soul Charity Fundraiser
When: Saturday, February 28, 5:30-9:30pm
Where: Under Minerva Art Gallery, 656 5th Avenue, between 19th and 20th Streets
What: Join neighbors for an evening of art and music to fight hunger in New York City. The event will feature a silent auction with works from local artists and performances by Bare Opera. All donations and a portion of the art sales will go to City Harvest.
How much: $25 suggested donation online or at the door. Donations of $50 or more will receive a full dinner for two from Rooster’s Caribbean Tapas.

Nature Playtime: Zoo
When: Sunday, March 1, 10:30am-12:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Zoo, 450 Flatbush Avenue
What: The Prospect Park Alliance, Prospect Park Zoo, and Tinkergarten are teaming up (with a little help from the Disney Conservation Fund) to bring families creative play opportunities in the park’s natural areas. Every Sunday through April, those visiting the Prospect Park Zoo will be able to take part in Nature Playtime! in the native plant garden. Look for nature-inspired art, insect observation, playing with snow, scavenger hunts, and more. Want to try some Nature Playtime activities on your own? Download a free activity card here. Gluten-Free Eat Up One-Year Anniversary Party
When: Sunday, March 1, 1-6pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Discover how tasty gluten-free can be at Freddy’s this weekend, as neighbor Deb Goldstein celebrates the one year anniversary of her Gluten-Free Eat Up, featuring goodies like grilled cheese sandwiches, hand-pies, sauces, pasta, vegan kimchee, and more. Look for $5 American Pale Ale, a tasting from sponsor Glutenberg Beer, and a raffle that includes VIP tickets to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Proceeds benefit the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University.
How much: Free admission.

Stephane Wrembel
When: Sunday, March 1, 9pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street and 6th Avenue
What: French guitarist Stephane Wrembel, who Rolling Stone calls “a revelation,” brings a little gypsy swing to the Barbes stage on Sunday. You won’t want to miss it.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.
