South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: December 18-22

Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from holiday shopping and comedy, to jugs and a Christmas bird count, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood through Monday:

Brooklyn’s Largest Menorah Lighting
When: Through December 23
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: Hanukkah starts this week, so be sure to head over to Grand Army Plaza for the giant menorah lighting. December 16-18, the lighting will take place at 6pm, December 19 at 3:30pm, December 20 at 7pm, and December 21-23 at 6pm. In addition to the menorah, there will be live music, dreidels, doughnuts, latkes, and prizes for the kids.
How much: Free.

Nick Whitmer Does An Hour
When: Thursday, December 18, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Take a break from the impending holiday and sit back for some laughs as Nick Whitmer from Brooklyn State of Mind Comedy takes the stage at Freddy’s.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, December 19, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Bill Carney’s Jug Addicts
When: Friday, December 19, 10pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: It’s all about the jugs this Friday at Barbes, as Sans-Culottes founder and frontman Bill Carney leads his Brooklyn-based band, which Barbes says is “characterized by their powerful, raucous approach to its jug band, old time, tin pan alley, early jazz and blues repertoire.”
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation

Christmas Bird Count
When: Saturday, December 20, 12pm and 3pm
Where: Prospect Park
What: Take part in a tradition that is over 100 years old this weekend in Prospect Park. The Christmas Bird Count is part of a nationwide bird census that relies on volunteers armed with binoculars, bird guides, and checklists to help track local bird populations. There are two counts on Saturday: 12 pm and 3 pm. Call 718- 287-3400 x 303 for more information.

Libra Holiday Pop Up Shop
When: December 20, 4-8pm and December 21-23, 10:30am-7:30pm
Where: Hootenanny Art House, 428 15th Street at 8th Avenue
What: Get your last minute holiday shopping in at Hootenanny Art House this weekend as Libra (formerly Sweet Charity) hosts a seasonal pop up store. Shoppers can look for sales up to 40% off, including 10% off your whole purchase, and an additional 30% off ornaments, holiday stationery, and Sweet Charity overstock sale items like clothing, kid’s gifts, and jewelry.
How much: Free.

History In Your Hands: Historic Games & Needlework
When: Saturdays and Sundays in December, 1-3pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Spend a cozy afternoon at Lefferts Historic House this month making your own 9-man-morris board. Families will also have an opportunity to create a small needlework sampler to take home.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Folk Sing-a-Long With Katy Stone
When: Monday, December 22, 11:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Bring your babies and toddlers to the Park Slope Library on Monday morning, and get folksy with Katy Stone. Note that tickets are required, so be sure to arrive to the library early and secure your spot.
How much: Free.

Zumba!
When: Monday, December 22, 5pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Get in shape (and have a blast doing it) every Monday at the Park Slope Library.
How much: Free.
