South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: April 2-5

Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from poetry and a bargain basement sale and the Mad Men premier, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:

Poetry Reading: James Shea And Jennifer Mackenzie
When: Thursday, March 26,6:30-8pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Poets James Shea and Jennifer Mackenzie will read from their work, including recent Fence Books publications The Lost Novel and My Not-My Soldier, respectively.
How much: Free!

Trivial Dispute
When: Thursday, April 2, 9pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue
What: Switch your knit cap (go away, cold weather) for your thinking cap, as you tackle a few rounds of trivia! Big prizes and bragging rights await the winner.
How much: No cover.

Spring Break At Prospect Park
When: Friday, April 3-Sunday, April 12, various times
Where: Prospect Park
What: Schools are out, and the park is the place to be. From fun, free activities — including nature and animal programs — to rides on the carousel and spins around the roller rink at Lakeside, families will find plenty to do throughout the week.

New Brew: Sex! Comedy! Economics! An Evening With Trav S.D. (And Friends)
When: Friday, April 3, 8pm
Where: Barbès, 376 9th Street
What: Trav S.D. (libretto) and David Mallamud (music) collaborated on this campy comic opera that’s a post-modern mash-up of Universal horror films, The Pied Piper of Hamelin, the operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, the writings of Sigmund Freud, and numerous other elements.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.

Flax Planting
When: Saturday, April 4, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Celebrate the start of spring by helping the Alliance plant its first crop of the season. Kids can harness their love of gardening by spreading flax seed and watering.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Basement Garage Sale
When: Saturday, April 4, 12:30-4:30pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Need a box of old sci-fi magazines, an LED projector, drum heads, or a guitar amp? Freddy’s is unloading those, and more, in the backroom this weekend, so swing by and score a deal.
How much: No cover.

Early Morning Bridwalk
When: Sunday, April 5, 8am
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Take a tour with the Brooklyn Bird Club to welcome the park’s earliest migrants, and bid farewell to our winter residents.
How much: Free!

Nature Playtime: Zoo
When: Sunday, April 5, 10:30am-12:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Zoo, 450 Flatbush Avenue
What: The Prospect Park Alliance, Prospect Park Zoo, and Tinkergarten are teaming up (with a little help from the Disney Conservation Fund) to bring families creative play opportunities in the park’s natural areas. Every Sunday through April, those visiting the Prospect Park Zoo will be able to take part in Nature Playtime! in the native plant garden. Look for nature-inspired art, insect observation, playing with snow, scavenger hunts, and more. Want to try some Nature Playtime activities on your own? Download a free activity card here. A new card will be added to the website each month through April.

Mad Men Screening
