South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: April 16-19

Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from CD release parties and Earth Day, to poetry and gypsy swing, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:

Dan Kilian and the Million Man Band CD Release Party
When: Thursday, April 17, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Join musician Dan Kilian for live music and fun at Freddy’s, as they raise a glass to his new album. Apparently, the evening will also be filled with “drawing, modeling, coloring, performances, video shoots, flags, hats, coats, howling and a small harmless firework,” which sounds like a great way to kick off the weekend.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, April 17, 12pm
Where: Prospect Park, Audubon Center
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Roots Poetry Series
When: Friday, April 17, 8pm
Where: Roots Cafe, 639 5th Avenue, between 18th and 19th Streets
What: The monthly poetry series at Roots brings together an impressive lineup on Friday night! Look for readings from Miriam Moster, Morgan Parker, Charif Shanahan, and Iris Cushing.
How much: Free.

Spring Sprouts
When: Saturdays and Sundays through April, 2-4pm
Where: Prospect Park Lefferts Historic House
What: It’s time for spring sprouts at Lefferts Historic House. Kids are invited to make a pot out of newspaper, fill it with soil, and plant an herb seed to take home.
How much: $3 suggested donation

Old Man Gilly And Friends
When: Saturday, April 18, 6-8pm
Where: Mary’s Bar, 708 5th Avenue at 22nd Street
What: Wind down with Mary’s this Saturday as Old Man Gilly and Friends share classic acoustic folk music and stories.
How much: No cover.

Nature Playtime: Zoo
When: Sunday, April 19, 10:30am-12:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Zoo, 450 Flatbush Avenue
What: The Prospect Park Alliance, Prospect Park Zoo, and Tinkergarten are teaming up (with a little help from the Disney Conservation Fund) to bring families creative play opportunities in the park’s natural areas. Every Sunday through April, those visiting the Prospect Park Zoo will be able to take part in Nature Playtime! in the native plant garden. Look for nature-inspired art, insect observation, playing with snow, scavenger hunts, and more. Want to try some Nature Playtime activities on your own? Download a free activity card here. A new card will be added to the website each month through April.
How much: Free with zoo admission.

Earth Day in Prospect Park
When: Sunday, April 19, 1-4pm
Where: Prospect Park, Audubon Center
What: Celebrate Mother Earth at the Audubon Center this Sunday. Families will enjoy fishing lessons (1-4pm), a raptor meet and greet (1-3pm), a lakeshore cleanup from 2-3pm, and an opportunity to make instruments with recycled materials, and then participate in a parade led by Bash the Trash (3-4pm).
How much: Free.

Michael Sheridan Trio
When: Sunday, April 19, 9pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: From classical sounds to gypsy swing, guitarist Michael Sheridan (shown above) and his trio featuring Larry Cook and Will de la Motte are sure to impress at Barbes this Sunday.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.
