South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: September 29-October 2
Don’t wait until this weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from anniversary cocktails at Applewood to dancing in Prospect Park, the Slope is definitely the place to be through Thursday. Here’s some of our favorite events from around the area:
Applewood 10th Anniversary Celebration
When: Monday, September 29, 6-10pm
Where: Applewood, 501 11th Street at 7th Avenue
What: Celebrate ten years of “good food, great folks, and fun” as Applewood owners David and Laura Shea celebrate the restaurant’s anniversary. No reservations are required for the cocktail-style event, which will feature cocktails, wine, house-made sodas, and dishes from Applewood’s opening menu. Congratulations, David and Laura!
How much: No cover.
Cafe Steinhof 9th Anniversary Party
When: Monday, September 29, 7pm
Where: Cafe Steinhof, 422 7th Avenue at 14th Street
What: It’s a great night to celebrate local businesses! Raise a glass of free beer and enjoy a plate of free goulash with the crew from 7-9pm, then enjoy one of the best neighborhood traditions: The Sound Of Music screening and sing-a-long! Dressing up in lederhosen, etc., is strongly encouraged.
How much: No cover.
Chicha Libre
When: Monday, September 29, 9:30pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Looking for something a little different? Chicha Libre plays a mixture of latin rhythms, surf music and psychedelic pop inspired by 1970s Peruvian music from the Amazon.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.
Toddler Tuesday
When: Every Tuesday, 9:30am-12pm
Where: Prospect Park, LeFrak Center at Lakeside
What: Hit the Lakeside rink with the neighborhood’s youngest Slopers every Tuesday morning. Kids ages 2-5 (and their caregivers) will have a blast with instructor-led play and music activities, healthy snacks, and open skate time with skate rentals, helmets, and pad packs included.
How much: $15 per child, free admission for accompanying adult ($6 adult skate rental available).
Kings Bay Y Rock With Adam
When: Wednesday, October 1, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Are you ready to rock? Neighborhood kids are definitely in for a treat as guitarist Adam Blotner plays some of his favorite tunes.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so be sure to arrive early to score your ticket.
Story Play
When: Wednesday, October 1, 1:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Bring the family out to the library on Wednesday afternoon for stories, games, and fun with friends. Geared toward children ages birth to 3 years.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so once again, be sure to arrive early.
Shape Up NYC: Dance Fitness
When: Thursday, October 2, 11am
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shake your groove thing at the Audubon Center on Thursday and get into shape. This new total-body workout class “uses easy-to-follow dance steps to increase cardiovascular fitness and tone the body.”
How much: Free.
