South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: March 23-25

Don’t wait until this weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from meditation and book groups, to picnic house tours and storytelling, South Slope is definitely the place to be through Wednesday. Here are some of our favorite events from around the area:

Brain Cloud
When: Monday, March 23, 7pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Make your way to Barbes on Monday night and let Brain Cloud serenade you with their Bob Wills inspired “New Orleans-meets-Texas, strings-meet-horns, jazz-meets-country sound.” It’s great stuff.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.

Toddler Tuesday
When: Every Tuesday, 9:30am-12pm
Where: Prospect Park, LeFrak Center at Lakeside
What: This is the last week of the ice skating season for Toddler Tuesdays at Lakeside! Kids ages 2-5 (and their caregivers) will have a blast with instructor-led play and music activities, healthy snacks, and open skate time with skate rentals, helmets, and pad packs included. Ice skating grippers are available on a first-come, first-served basis for caregivers not comfortable on the ice.
How much: $15 per child, free admission for accompanying adult ($6 adult skate rental available).

The Art Of Living Meditation Workshop
When: Tuesday, March 24, 6-8pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Stress and life in the big city often go hand in hand, but the Park Slope Library is at the ready with a meditation workshop, led by volunteer organization The Art of Living. Note that this class is for adults only. No reservation is required.
How much: Free.

Rock With Adam
When: Wednesday, March 24, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Are you ready to rock? Neighborhood kids are definitely in for a treat as guitarist Adam Blotner plays some of his favorite tunes.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so be sure to arrive early to score your ticket.

Folk Sing-A-Long With Katy Stone
When: Wednesday, March 24, 11:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: After Rock With Adam wraps up, the library is getting folksy with Katy Stone. Geared toward children through age 5. As with the above performance, note that tickets are required, so be sure to arrive to the library early and secure your spot.
How much: Free.

Picnic House Tours
When: Wednesday, March 25, 5-8pm
Where: Picnic House, Prospect Park
What: Interested in holding a special event in Prospect Park’s gorgeous Picnic House? Don’t miss their open house, scheduled for Wednesday evening. Admission is free, but RSVP is required.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Glutes In Gear
When: Wednesday, March 25, 6-7pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Looking for a belly-busting, booty shaping workout? This two-part class focuses on high-endurance cardio and mat work to build your core, and flatten and tighten your abs and glutes. No registration is required, but be sure to bring your own mat.
How much: Free.

Brooklyn Transitions Book Discussion: Desperate Characters
When: Wednesday, March 25, 6-8pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Join neighbors for a series of book discussions focusing on the gentrification of Brooklyn. This week, the group will discuss Paula Fox’s Desperate Characters, “the story of two so-called Brownstone pioneers, Otto and Sophie Bentwood, living just outside of Brooklyn Heights in the yet-to-be super gentrified Cobble/Boerum Hill area.” Librarians have copies of the book if you don’t have your own, and refreshments will be provided.
How much: Free.

So What Happened Was…
When: Wednesday, March 25, 8pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Who doesn’t love a great story? Come out to Freddy’s Wednesday night and listen to four scheduled storytellers (plus one lucky member of the audience) weave true tales “about times we (or things) weren’t what we usually expect them to be.”
How much: No cover
