South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: July 20-22

Don’t wait until the weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from author talks and science experiments, to Interpol and movies under the stars, folks in the Slope won’t have to go far for summertime entertainment. Below are some of our favorite events from around the area.

The Brain Cloud
When: Monday, July 20, 7pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Make your way to Barbes on Monday night and let Brain Cloud serenade you with their Bob Wills inspired “New Orleans-meets-Texas, strings-meet-horns, jazz-meets-country sound.” It’s great stuff.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.

BOOKISH: Writers Talking
When: Tuesday, July 21, 6-8pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Join Kensington novelist Amy Shearn as she hosts a brand new interview series at the Park Slope Library. This week celebrates the paperback release of Now I See You, by author Nicole C. Kear. Nicole will talk about “learning at age 19 that she was slowly going blind, finding humor in the face of catastrophe, and what she has discovered about life, love, and lighting along the way.”
How much: Free.

Celebrate Brooklyn!: Interpol
When: Tuesday, July 21, 7pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: Temperatures around the city have certainly been heating up lately, but the hottest place in town on Tuesday will definitely be the Celebrate Brooklyn! Bandshell, where tickets are still available for the Interpol concert. Joining Interpol is the “rocking new project by Secret Machines’ Brandon Curtis,” Cosmicide.
How much: $35 ($41.75 with service fees)

Little Science With Miss Carmen
When: Wednesday, July 22, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: If you have a budding scientist between the ages of 2.5 and 5, the Park Slope Library is the place to be on Wednesday, were kids and their caregivers will participate in fun experiments with Miss Carmen.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so be sure to arrive 30 minutes before the program to secure your spot.

Superhero Training Lab
When: Wednesday, July 22, 3-4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Wednesday’s Park Slope Library craft hour has kids (ages 6 and up) rocking themed crafts, listening to superhero stories, and more! Note that younger children are welcome as long as they’re accompanied by an adult.
How much: Free, but limited to 20 participants, so get there early to guarantee a spot.

Shape Up NYC: Glutes In Gear
When: Wednesday, July 22, 6-7pm
Where: Prospect Park, Audubon Center
What: Looking for a belly-busting, booty shaping workout? This two-part class focuses on high-endurance cardio and mat work to build your core, and flatten and tighten your abs and glutes. No registration is required, but be sure to bring your own mat.
How much: Free.

Summer Movie Under The Stars
When: Wednesday, July 22, 7-11pm
Where: Prospect Park, Long Meadow North
What: Nothing says summer like movies in the park! Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and the Prospect Park Alliance present screenings of family films every Wednesday on Long Meadow. Entertainment begins at 7pm, and the movies will start after sunset. Don’t forget your Reese’s Pieces, because this week’s film is the Steven Spielberg classic, E.T.
How much: Free.
