South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: August 4-7

Don’t wait until this weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from jazz to creative writing workshops, South Slope is definitely the place to be through Thursday.

Shape Up NYC: Couch To 5k
When: Monday, August 4, 7pm
Where: Meets in Prospect Park on the porch of Lefferts Historic House
What: Don’t let the summer heat get you down! Lace up those sneakers, and make your fitness dreams a reality in Prospect Park. This weekly jog combines group running, walking, and conditioning exercises to get you in shape for long distance running.
How much: Free.

Orlando Le Fleming & Friends
When: Tuesday, August 5, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s Bar & Backroom, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Professional cricketer turned bassist Orlando Le Fleming is taking over the backroom at Freddy’s on Tuesday night. Come get cozy with a little jazz.
How much: Free.

Story Play
When: Wednesday, August 6, 1:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Bring the family out to the library on Wednesday afternoon for stories, games, and fun with friends. Geared toward children ages birth to 3 years.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so be sure to arrive early to score your ticket.

Shape Up NYC: Boot Camp
When: Thursday, August 7, 11am
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Bring your workout mat up to the Audubon Center Thursday and annihilate those calories with a total body workout. The boot camp focuses on muscle strength and endurance.
How much: Free.

Free Carousel Rides
When: Every Thursday in August, 12-6pm
Where: Prospect Park
What: Who doesn’t love a ride on the Prospect Park Carousel?! Every Thursday afternoon throughout the month of August, kids 12 and under are invited to hop on for free. Note that children must be accompanied by an adult.
How much: Free.

Tween Creative Writing Workshop: Build-A-Character
When: Thursday, August 7, 5:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Is your kid the next J.K. Rowling? Give their writing skills a jumpstart with the Park Slope Library’s character development workshop on Thursday. Lead by local writer Elizabeth Isadora Gold, children will create a fictionalized story about a character they’ve based on themselves.
How much: Free.
