South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: August 24 – 27
Don’t wait until the weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from bridge building and comedy, to folk rock and creatures of the night, folks in the Slope won’t have to go far for summertime entertainment. Below are some of our favorite events from around the area.

Dirty Hoe Monday Open Mic Night
When: Monday, August 24, 6:30pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Looking for a fantastic spot to test out your new material? Make your way to Freddy’s for their weekly open mic comedy night. Register early by emailing dirtyhoecomedy@gmail.com. Walk-ins are also welcome on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up begins at 6pm, and the first comic hits the stage at 6:30pm.
How much: No cover, but comics must purchase at least one item from the bar for a 7-minute set.
Jefferson Hamer
When: Tuesday, August 25, 7pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: If you’re looking for a bit of folk rock to get you through the week, don’t miss Jefferson Hamer, hitting the Barbes stage on Tuesday night.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.
ArchForKids – Build With Me
When: Wednesday, August 26, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Get creative with the kids this Wednesday, as Friends of Park Slope Library hosts a special craft event that helps children ages 3-7 build bridges, houses, skyscrapers, and more from paper bags and boxes.
How much: Free, but space is limited, so be sure to arrive early.
KIDtivity
When: Wednesday, August 26, 11am-6pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: As the summer rolls on, you may be running out of ways to keep the kids busy, happy, and out of your hair. Lakeside has your back on Wednesday, with their day of KIDtivities. From 11am to 6pm, look for everything from fitness classes and puppet shows, to free skating and cooking classes.
How much: Free, but reservations are strongly recommended. For more information, call Lakeside at 718-462-0010.
Superhero Training Lab
When: Wednesday, August 26, 3-4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Wednesday’s Park Slope Library craft hour has kids (ages 6 and up) rocking themed crafts, listening to superhero stories, and more! Note that younger children are welcome as long as they’re accompanied by an adult.
How much: Free, but limited to 20 participants, so get there early to guarantee a spot.
Creatures Of The Night
When: Thursday, August 27, 7-9pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Join Naturalist Paul Keim in Prospect Park on Thursday to meet the creatures that walk (or fly) the night. The evening will start with wine and cheese, while Paul talks about the role bats and insects play in the environment, followed by a walking tour to spot resident bats in flight. Note that the event is restricted to ages 21 and up, and reservations are required. Reserve your spot by calling 718-287-3400 x 303 or register online.
How much: $25 per person, cash only at the door.
