Don’t wait until the weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from salsa and penguins, to magic and poetry, folks in the Slope won’t have to go far for summertime entertainment. Below are some of our favorite events from around the area.

El Combo Chimbita
When: Monday, August 10, 7pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Looking for a “duel trombone attack of classic NYC Salsa with a rootsy, bass-heavy, laid back organic groove?” Get thee to Barbes on Monday night, where El Combo Chimbita is set to take the stage.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.

Having A Whiskey Coke With You
When: Tuesday, August 11, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Come out to Freddy’s on Tuesday night for “a reading and performance series featuring a community of New York’s finest poets, writers, musicians, performers and artists.” In addition to the scheduled performers, there’s also an open mic. Those interested in reading can sign up at Freddy’s the night of the event.
How much: Free.

Story Play
When: Wednesday, August 12, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Bring the family out to the library on Monday morning for stories, games, and fun with friends. Geared toward children ages birth to 3 years.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), be sure to arrive early.

KIDtivity
When: Wednesday, August 12, 11am-6pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: As the summer rolls on, you may be running of ways to keep the kids busy, happy, and out of your hair. Lakeside has your back on Wednesday, with their day of KIDtivities. From 11am to 6pm, look for everything from fitness classes and puppet shows, to free skating and cooking classes.
How much: Free, but reservations are strongly recommended. For more information, call Lakeside at 718-462-0010.

Joe Magic Man
When: Wednesday, August 12, 3-4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Ready for a little hocus pocus? Joe Magic Man will delight kids of all ages at the Park Slope Library Wednesday afternoon with a variety of tricks and acts. Note that the show is geared toward children over 6, but younger kids are welcome with an adult.
How much: Free.

Summer Movie Under The Stars
When: Wednesday, August 12, 7-11pm
Where: Prospect Park, Long Meadow North
What: Nothing says summer like movies in the park! Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and the Prospect Park Alliance present screenings of family films every Wednesday on Long Meadow. Entertainment begins at 7pm, and the movies will start after sunset. This week we’ve got adorable penguins with some serious moves in Happy Feet.
How much: Free.
