South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: April 6-9
Don’t wait until this weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from pierogies and blues, to Whitman and family films, South Slope is definitely the place to be through Thursday. Here are some of our favorite events from around the area:
Spring Break In Prospect Park
When: Through Sunday, April 12, 12-5pm
Where: Prospect Park
What: Whether learning about Snappy the turtle, making a nature journal, catching a ride on the carousel, or helping to plant sprouts at Lefferts House, Prospect Park is ready to help keep the kids entertained this spring break.
How much: Audubon Center activities are free/$3 suggested donation for Spring Planting at Lefferts House/$2 per ride on the carousel.
Dyngus Day
When: Monday, April 6
Where: Bar 718, 718 5th Avenue, between 22nd and 23rd Streets
What: It’s all about pierogies, pickle shots, krupnik, and other Polish delights, as Bar 718 celebrates Dyngus Day. You had us at pierogies.
How much: No cover.
Ragtime And Bluez Jam
When: Tuesday, April 7, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Miss Ida Blue hosts a brand new “sleazy greasy love jam” at Freddy’s on Tuesday night. In addition to Miss Ida, look for Dan Block on reeds, Brian Nalepka on tuba/bass, Conal Fowkes on piano.
How much: Free.
Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb
When: Wednesday, April 8, 3:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Join neighbors for an afternoon movie at the Park Slope Library! This week, Ben Stiller discovers that his wax friends at the Natural History Museum are in trouble, and journeys to London’s British Museum to try and save the day, in the sequel to Night at the Museum.
How much: Free.
Shape Up NYC: Glutes In Gear
When: Wednesday, April 8, 6-7pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Looking for a belly-busting, booty shaping workout? This two-part class focuses on high-endurance cardio and mat work to build your core, and flatten and tighten your abs and glutes. No registration is required, but be sure to bring your own mat.
How much: Free.
The Mandingo Ambassadors
When: Wednesday, April 8, 10pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: West African grooves from the Mandingo Ambassadors are a weekly staple at Barbes. If you haven’t experienced their “dazzling vocal and guitar patterns,” do yourself a favor and stop by this Wednesday to check it out.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.
Walt Whitman’s Writing Process: The Poet at Work in Brooklyn
When: Thursday, April 9, 6-7:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: With digital images of Walt Whitman’s manuscripts, Professor Matt Miller will explore the Grandfather of American poetry’s writing process on Thursday night.
How much: Free.
