South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: April 13-15
Don’t wait until this weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from open mic comedy and trivia, to music from the Mandinka Kora and the Turkish Oud, South Slope is definitely the place to be through Thursday. Here are some of our favorite events from around the area:
Dirty Hoe Monday Open Mic Night
When: Monday, April 13, 6:30pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Looking for a fantastic spot to test out your new material? Make your way to Freddy’s for their weekly open mic comedy night. Register early by emailing dirtyhoecomedy@gmail.com. Walk-ins are also welcome on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up begins at 6pm, and the first comic hits the stage at 6:30pm.
How much: No cover, but comics must purchase at least one item from the bar for a 7-minute set.
Trivia Night
When: Tuesday, April 14, 8pm
Where: Johnny Mack’s, 1114 8th Avenue
What: If you’ve got some trivial knowledge just taking up room in your brain, let it out here for the possibility of free shots and prizes!
How much: Free.
Shape Up NYC: Glutes In Gear
When: Wednesday, April 15, 6-7pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Looking for a belly-busting, booty shaping workout? This two-part class focuses on high-endurance cardio and mat work to build your core, and flatten and tighten your abs and glutes. No registration is required, but be sure to bring your own mat.
How much: Free.
Kane Mathis Trio
When: Wednesday, April 15, 8pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: Get to know the music of the 21-string Mandinka Kora and the Turkish Oud, when internationally acclaimed musician Kane Mathis takes the Barbes stage. Also look for Moto Fukushima on bass, Luke Notary on drums, and other special guests.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.
