South Slope Events Spotlight: July 4-7

From plumed hats to sci-fi nerds, our neighborhood is hopping with fun and excitement this 4th of July weekend. Here are some of our top picks:

Declare Independence At Lefferts Historic House
When: Thursday, July 4, 1pm to 4pm
Where: Prospect Park Children’s Corner (intersection of Ocean and Flatbush Avenues and Empire Boulevard).
What: The 4th of July is about more than barbecues, fireworks, and booze (we know, take a moment to collect yourself), and the Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park has a really cool event planned to help kids connect with the history behind the holiday. In addition to signing their “John Hancock” on a reproduction of the Declaration of Independence, they’ll get the make a plumed hat (all the patriots wear one).
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Piper Theatre Presents Frankenstein at Old Stone House
When: Friday, July 5, 8:30pm
Where: 5th Avenue between 3rd and 4th Street
What: Piper Theatre kicks off their free summer theatre series with Frankenstein, “a play for adults and brave children.”  Look for live music and six original rear film projections that will “offer a glimpse into the mystery of the man behind the Creature.” Visit the Piper Theatre website for additional performance dates.
How much: Free!

Prospect Park Drum Jam
When: Saturday, July 6, 11am to 11:45am
Where: Vanderbilt Playground
What: Let the kids rock out, learn games and sing songs in Prospect Park with Play Music’s outdoor drum jam. The event will take place every Saturday through August 25. For more information, contact Zaneta Sykes at 347-470-DRUM, or visit the Play Music website.

Geek Out At Freddy’s For Firefly Trivia Night
When: Sunday, July 7, 5pm
Where: 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Sci-fi fans unite! Freddy’s is hosting a trivia night this Sunday, focusing on the cult television classic Firefly. There will be prizes…..
