South Slope Events Spotlight: November 23-29
It’s the week of Thanksgiving, y’all! If you’re hanging around the Slope and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from open mic and storytelling, to local shopping and tree lightings. Don’t miss our top events picks from around the area:
Zumba
When: Monday, November 23, 5pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Kick off a new fitness regimen at the Park Slope Library every Monday, as the branch hosts an energetic Zumba class for the community.
How much: Free.
Park Slope Presents: Open Mic Night
When: Tuesday, November 24, 7-8:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Share your musical talents with the community every month at the Park Slope Library. The new open mic night invites folks to bring “guitars, mandolins, violins – anything you can carry – as well as your voices!”
How much: Free.

When: Wednesday, November 25, 7pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Who doesn’t love a great story? Come out to Freddy’s on Wednesday night and listen to some true stories from fun people.

Mira Gáberová Presents Statue of Everything
When: Through November 30
Where: Open Source Gallery, 306 17th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue
What: All the world is a stage – especially this month at Open Source Gallery – where artist Mira Gáberová presents her new multimedia installation, Statue of Everything.
How much: Free.
Getting Merry At Mary’s
When: Thursday, November 26, 7:30pm-2:30am
Where: Mary’s Bar, 708 5th Avenue and 22nd Street
What: Congratulations! You survived another Thanksgiving with your family. Mary’s opens at 8pm, so come celebrate with friends, and ring in the holiday season.
How much: Free.
Regional de NY CD Release Party
When: Friday, November 27, 8pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street and 6th Avenue
What: The Regional de NY bring “lyrical melodies, contrapuntal harmonies, and a swinging rhythm section” to the Barbes stage on Friday night, as they celebrate their newest album, Na Roda.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation
Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea at Industry City
When: Saturday, November 28 and Sunday, November 29, 10am-6pm
Where: Industry City, 241 37th Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues
What: Smorgasburg heads down to the booming Industry City, which may be new territory for you. While the move was announced some time ago, Industry City will house both Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea every Saturday and Sunday until March 27, 2016. Keep in mind that Industry City is big — the entrance address is 241 37th Street. This is just two blocks from the 36th Street D/N/R subway station—only two stops from Manhattan on the D train!—and a short walk from the B35, B38 and B70 bus stops. The 39th Street exit off the Gowanus Expressway/BQE also takes you pretty much to their doorstep (and to the second-busiest Costco in America next door).
Small Business Saturday
When: Saturday, November 28
Where: 5th Avenue, form Dean to 18th Street
What: Ready to show some love to our neighborhood businesses? Small Business Saturday is here, and stores up and down 5th Avenue have impressive deals for those ready to kick off their holiday shopping at the local level.
Celebration: Annual Quilt Show
When: Saturdays and Sundays in November, 1-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park
What: Looking for a relaxing weekend activity? Lefferts House currently has quilts on loan from The Quilters’ Guild of Brooklyn that range from “traditional to contemporary to mixed media fiber art.” The impressive and original creations were inspired by this year’s theme of ‘celebration.’
How much: $3 suggested donation.
Fifth Avenue Holiday Tree Lighting
When: Saturday, November 28, 6:30pm
Where: 5th Avenue and 4th Street
What: Things are getting festive on Fifth this weekend. The annual tree lighting ceremony is scheduled for Saturday evening, and families have lots to look forward to this year, including free hot chocolate, marshmallows, cookies, brownies, and popcorn (good luck getting the kids to sleep after all of that). Sarah Stevens, Rolie Polie Guacamole, Amelia Robinson, Opera on Tap, and Puppetry Arts are all scheduled to perform. Plus, Prospect Park YMCA will have an ornament making table set up, and Santa Claus will stop by to say hello.

Winter On Flatbush Farm
When: Sunday, November 29, 1-3pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park
What: Enjoy a 19th winter at Lefferts House this weekend. Kids can learn how to make a candle, watch a master spinster spin wool thread, and enjoy Dutch treats made at an outdoor hearth from a Lefferts family recipe. Be sure to be around at 3pm, when we hear jolly old St. Nicholas will stop by!
