South Slope Events Spotlight: November 15-18

From a women’s personal safety seminar to a tour filled with murder and mayhem, there’s plenty to do around South Slope this weekend, and these are our top picks.

Thursday, November 15

The Park Slope Academy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (518 5th Avenue) is holding a FREE women’s person safety seminar this evening from 7pm – 8:30pm. Wear comfy clothes and prepare to put in some work on the mats.

Friday, November 16

Looking for a Friday night happy hour? Stop in at Barbes between 5pm and 7pm for their cocktail set. The Crooked Trio plays “straight and skewed standards”. Oscar Noriega – drums; Brian Drye – piano; Matt Pavolka – bass and a rotating cast of special guests.

Saturday, November 17

Green-Wood’s Murder, Mayhem and Disasters Walking Tour is a must see for those interested in some of the more tragic aspects of New York history. According to the cemetery’s website, “the Morro Castle disaster and possible murder of her captain, the sinking of the steamship Arctic, the Malbone Street train crash, a suicide on the grave of a beloved wife, the arsenic and clam chowder murder, Titanic survivors and the Brooklyn Theatre fire are just some of the tragic tales you’ll hear amidst a landscape of late fall beauty”.
