South Slope Events Spotlight: December 30-January 5

Looking for something to do around the neighborhood this week?

NYE Family Movie Time
When: Tuesday, December 31, 10:30am to 12:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue, between 8th and 9th Streets
What: Start the party early and join neighbors at the Park Slope Library for a fun family movie.
How much: Free!

Fireworks in Prospect Park
When: Tuesday, December 31, 11pm/Fireworks at midnight
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: If you’re sticking close to home this New Year’s Eve, Prospect Park is the place to be as the clock inches toward 2014. Starting at 11pm, there will be music, hot chocolate and a changing of the guard as Borough President Mary Markowitz “hands over the reins” to President-Elect Eric Adams. At midnight, the sky will come alive with one of the city’s best fireworks displays. Set up camp anywhere from 9th Street to Grand Army on Prospect Park West, or inside the park along West Drive to see the show.

Hangover Help At Mary’s

What: Feeling a little fuzzy after ringing in 2014? Mary’s is here to help with coffee, cupcakes and Bellinis.
How much: Free!

Shape Up NYC: Cardio, Toning, and Stretching
When: Thursday, January 2 (repeats every Thursday through February 13), 11am
Where: Prospect Park’s Audubon Center
What: If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to get into shape, head over to Prospect Park on Thursday for one of the city’s free group exercise classes. The Thursday cardio, toning, and stretching class is medium in intensity and “will boost your energy levels, improve your health, and get your heart pumping.” The class is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness, so just pop on some comfy clothing, supportive sneakers (and a mat if you have one) and get physical.

Madeleine Woods and Emmanuel May Pazavekmi
When: Friday, January 3, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Celebrate the weekend with some music at Freddy’s. From a group of “hard-rocking eclectic musicians, with a soulful blend of alternative and countrified pop intensity,” to a “solo singer-songwriter, actress and dancer,” there’s a little something for everyone.  
How much: Free!

Coffee Bark
When: Saturday, January 4, 7am to 9am
Where: Meadow beside the Picnic House in Prospect Park (Enter at PPW and 3rd Street)
What: It’s the first Saturday of the month, which can only mean one thing…Coffee Bark with FIDO. There will be treats for dogs (and their owners), as well as information on off-leash activities.
How much: Free!

Story Time With Leah
When: Sunday, January 5, 11:30am
Where: Powerhouse on 8th, 1111 8th Avenue
What: It’s the first Powerhouse story time of the year! Bring the kids over to 8th Avenue and prepare to get lost in the magic of children’s literature.
