South Slope Events Spotlight: December 21-27
The week of Christmas is here! If you’re sticking around the Slope and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from winter parades and dueling parties, to klezmer and holiday beer to keep you and the family entertained. Here are some of our favorite events from around the area.

Open Source Gallery Soup Kitchen
When: Through December 31, 7-9pm
Where: Open Source, 306 17th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues
What: It’s time to celebrate food, art, and community at Open Source Gallery. Starting December 1 and continuing throughout the month for as many days as they have volunteers, Open Source will invite a range of people “from neighbors to artists to others who are down on their luck or simply hungry” to a warm, free meal from 7-9pm. Food is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and all are welcome. It’s not all about the food, though. Guests can also look forward to an artistic element from the evening’s host. 11th Annual Small Works Show
When: Through January 10
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: Great things definitely come in small packages at 440 Gallery this month, where the popular Small Works Show – made up of pieces that are all under 12″ – returns. Visit the 440 Gallery website for more information, and a list of the artists featured in this year’s show.

Zumba
When: Monday, December 21, 5pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Get in a few extra shimmies and shakes at the Park Slope Library this Monday, as the branch hosts an energetic Zumba class for the community.
How much: Free.
Make Music Winter
When: Monday, December 21, 5:30-7pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: Bring your bike to Grand Army Plaza on Monday night for a winter parade like no other, where cyclists will perform three musical pieces written for bicycle bells. No registration required – just meet up at Grand Army Plaza to join in the fun.
How much: Free.
Christmas Vs. Chanukah Party
When: Tuesday, December 22, 8pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: “This holiday season, candles won’t be the only things getting lit,” says the post for Freddy’s gigantic holiday celebration, starting at 8pm on Tuesday, and rocking Fifth Avenue all night long. Shmaltz and Smuttynose Brewing companies will be on hand, and guests are invited to have their picture taken with Dirty Santa!

The Griff and Joe Christmas (And To A Lesser Extent Hanukkah) Spectacular
When: Wednesday, December 23, 7:30pm (Doors) and 8pm (Show)
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street, at 5th Avenue
What: Dueling Christmas and Hanukkah parties? Stellar lineup of comedy and music? You can’t go wrong!
How much: $10 advance of show. Tickets available here. $12 at the door. This event will be mixed seated/standing. Arrive early for best seat selection.
The 6th Semi-Annual Purely Coincidental Night Of Klezmer
When: Thursday, December 24, 8pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street and 6th Avenue
What: Looking for something to do on Christmas Eve? Trumpeter Ben Holmes brings together some of NYC’s best interpreters of Klezmer and Yiddish song “in an impromptu evening of music merriment that may or may not be part of the ‘War on Christmas.'”
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.
Christmas At The Owl Farm
When: Friday, December 25, 12pm
Where: The Owl Farm, 297 9th Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues
What: Celebrate Christmas with family and friends at 9th Street’s Owl Farm, which will be rocking an incredible selection of holiday beers from 12pm until close. For a complete list of beers, visit the Owl Farm Facebook page.
How much: No cover.
Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea at Industry City
When: Saturday, December 26 and Sunday, December 27, 10am-6pm
Where: Industry City, 241 37th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
What: Smorgasburg has moved down to the booming Industry City, which may be new territory for you. While the move was announced some time ago, Industry City is housing both Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea every Saturday and Sunday until March 27, 2016. Keep in mind that Industry City is big — the entrance address is 241 37th Street. This is just two blocks from the 36th Street D/N/R subway station—only two stops from Manhattan on the D train!—and a short walk from the B35, B38 and B70 bus stops. The 39th Street exit off the Gowanus Expressway/BQE also takes you pretty much to our doorstep (and to the second-busiest Costco in America next door).
Obsolete Cinema Presents: The Farce Awakens
When: Sunday, December 27, 3pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Had it up to hear with all this Star Wars talk? Join the farce side with Obsolete Cinema and Freddy’s this weekend, as they present “enough spoofs, goofs, and knock-offs to sink an Imperial fleet.”
How much: No cover.
