Whether you’re in the mood for some NYC metal, or looking for a Labor Day spectacular, South Slope is the place to be this weekend. Here are our top neighborhood picks:

MADRUGADA
When: Thursday, August 29, 10pm
Where: Cafe Steinhof, 422 7th Avenue at 14th Street
What: Nothing like a jazzy Cuban vibe to get you on your feet.
How much: Free!

Wool Over Eyes Album Release Show
When: Friday, August 30, 9pm
Where: The Fifth Estate, 506 5th Avenue, between 12th and 13th Street
What: NYC Metal Band Wool Over Eyes celebrates the release of their  new album, Animus, at The Fifth Estate on Friday. CDs will be available at the show. You can also check out digital downloads at bandcamp.
How much: Free!

The Biting Fish Brass Band
When: Saturday, August 31, 10pm
Where: Barbes, 676 9th Street, near 6th Avenue
What: Get a taste of the Big Easy with this “high-energy, contagiously exuberant five piece New Orleans-style brass band.” Expect original music mixed with a classic brass band repertoire of spirituals, blues, gospel and funk.
How much: $10 (very strongly) suggested donation.

Greenwood Park Labor Day Weekend Spectacular
When: Sunday, September 1 and Monday, September 2
Where: 555 7th Avenue at 19th Street
What: Stretch that Labor Day celebration into two days of music, food, drinks and fun. Starting on Sunday, Greenwood Park will have live music, drink specials, and a hot dog eating contest (email greenwoodfatso@gmail.com for entry details).
