Soup Of The Day: Lobster Butternut Squash Bisque At The Soup Bowl
On a dreary day like today, nothing is more comforting than a piping hot bowl of soup. And with so many restaurants in Park Slope serving up the soul-warming stuff, we thought we’d take a look at a few of them this fall and winter.
This week, we go to a place where they know that if you do one thing right, that’s all you need to do. The Soup Bowl sets up shop at 319 7th Avenue, between 8th and 9th Streets, in the space that houses Uncle Louie G’s in the warmer months, and as the name states, they sell soup. They offer a wide variety, with a menu that changes daily (though a few regulars are available every day), and you’ll occasionally see risotto on the menu, too.
One of the soups you’ll find there every day is the lobster butternut squash bisque. It’s not surprising it’s a mainstay, as this popular soup is a satisfying one — rich and creamy but not too heavy, it’s also a bit sweet from the lobster and the squash. Even though there aren’t chunks of lobster in it — for the price, we wouldn’t expect it — the flavor comes through, enough that you could fool yourself into thinking you’re sitting at a dock in Maine, not at a cramped table on 7th Avenue.
Prices run, depending on size, from $3.99 to $12.50, and you can see what’s available each day on their website, with some hints on Twitter as well. If you’re looking for a first course for your Thanksgiving dinner, they do sell their soups by the quart — just note that they tend to sell out on some early in the day. They’re closed tomorrow, but they’re open today until 8:30pm or until they run out. Call 718-965-4237 before you head over to check on what they’ve got.
