Many neighbors were disappointed when Sooo Delicious (1801 Bath Avenue) closed earlier this summer.

Well, now we bring you the good news! Owners Nick Abulawi and Sam Obeid, who owns Key Food across the street, were not defeated by the difficult corner on Bath Avenue near 18th Avenue. They are simply reopening the eatery as an ethnic food market, called Abassi Middle Eastern Grocery, which they say will better meet the needs of the community.

Now featuring a wide selection of halal meats, huge tubs of Middle Eastern grains, fresh produce, and a buffet of delicious salads, Abassi still serves its signature sandwiches at a small cafe. Outdoor seating and fresh coffee drew a nice crowd when we stopped by on Saturday.

Abassi specializes in halal spins on American classics like this decadent-looking Philly cheese steak:

“We decided to reorganize based on what the community is looking for,” Obeid told us.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Abassi, and good luck!
