Some Ways To Support Typhoon Yolanda Relief Efforts
Typhoon Fundraiser Brunch via Purple Yam

Since Typhoon Yolanda (aka Typhoon Haiyan) touched down in the Philippines last Friday, nearly 1,000 people have been confirmed dead (and that number is expected to climb dramatically), survivors have been struggling with meager resources, and buildings and homes have been destroyed.

Our thoughts are with neighbors and their loved ones affected by the storm today. If you’re looking for a way to help, here are a few options:

• In nearby Ditmas Park, Filipino restaurant Purple Yam is helping survivors get back on their feet by hosting two fundraiser brunches. The brunches, both 11am-4pm on Sundays November 17 and November 24, are $40 per guest, with all proceeds going to Yolanda relief efforts. Reservations are suggested, so call 718-940-8188 or email bettyannquirino@gmail.com.

• Make a donation online to the Philippine Red Cross or the Philippine branch of Unicef.

• Text AID to 80108 to give a $10 donation to The mGive Foundation Philippines Typhoon Disaster Relief Fund, which will appear on your next wireless bill.

If you’d like to help in some other way, The New York Times has a great list of additional resources. And if you know of any local fundraising efforts, please share the details in the comments.
