Sneak Peek: SISTERS Restaurant

SISTERS Restaurant, the Flatbush Farm offshoot in the former Sister’s Community Hardware space at 900 Fulton Street (between Washington and Waverly Avenues), is set to open to the public this Saturday, November 8. Ahead of their first meal service, we spoke to owner Damon Gorton about the space’s past, its future–and, of course, what’s on the menu.

Damon, a longtime resident of Clinton Hill, can’t quite put his finger on how long he’s lived here. “It’s definitely more than 15 years,” he says. “Also, I’m really terrible at these interviews. You should say that.

“But [this] was my hardware store when they were open, so it just seemed right to open here and keep the name.”

Without a doubt, the space has a lot to live up to. Damon isn’t the first neighbor to have mentioned how special SISTERS was to him in its previous incarnation, and says no shortage of people have stopped in, curious about what’s coming to the important storefront.

“Mostly, though,” he says, “they’re just waiting for me to be finished!”

The space was originally set to open in August–but it looks like things will be worth the wait. Damon says while SISTERS and Flatbush Farm may share some aesthetic similarities–both have overall rustic sensibilities, though light tile, a huge skylight, and even tables with inset mirrors keep the environment at SISTERS sufficiently airy–the concepts and menus for each restaurant are quite different.

SISTERS will serve a smaller food program than Flatbush Farm, says Damon. The eatery will also be hosting music and entertainment events in their back room, which is equipped with a second bar, a stage, and a DJ booth.

The 60 seats at SISTERS are split over several different sections, keeping a space that doesn’t have actually have a terribly big footprint, says Damon, feeling large and dynamic. Café tables with modern caned chairs line one banquet-fitted front wall, while matching bar stools curve around the opposite side of the restaurant; a small raised dining area in the front room, made of the same warm wood as the restaurant’s ceiling and bar, ads a bit of seclusion away from the stunning front windows, while the speakeasy-esque back room is lined completely with the stuff.

Food will include dishes like duck cassoulet and a marrow appetizer (below), as well as salad, oysters, and more–see the full menu here. The bar will feature a large selection of wine, spirits, and beer, with six taps installed in the front room. For the first while, SISTERS will only serve dinner with hours from 5pm-2am, though they plan to eventually open as early as 7am to serve breakfast and lunch as well.

Stop in this weekend for dinner and welcome SISTERS back to the neighborhood–this time with a little less paint samples and key copying, and a little more culinary wonder.
