Snack Break: Snickerdoodle At Buttermilk Bakeshop
At some point during the afternoon, do you start to fade a bit? If you’re like us, a little bit of a sugar rush is just the thing to push you through until quitting time, and we’ve got just the thing: a big, chewy cookie from Buttermilk Bakeshop.
The bakery just opened its second location at 260 5th Avenue, between Garfield and Carroll, over the weekend, and it’s packed full of sweets. It’s hard to go wrong with whatever you pick, but we opted for the snickerdoodle, just one of several cookies they’ve got available for $2.50 each.
If you’re a crisp-cookie person, these might not be for you — they’re so melt-in-your-mouth soft that we bet they stay chewy until the next day, but ours didn’t last that long. And while some snickerdoodles can be a bit sandy or bland, these are pretty complex — rich and almost molasses-y, with a touch of cinnamon to give it some spice and a bit of caramel drizzled on top to really send you over the sugary edge. This is the grown-up version of a cookie you’re all familiar with from childhood, and boy has it learned a thing or two since then.
At $2.50, this might not be a snack you’ll reach for every day, but it does feel worth it. It’s not huge — probably about four inches across — but it’d probably be hard to eat more than one at a sitting. We think they’d dunk well in milk or coffee, and you’d be a hit if you brought a few to your family or a dinner party.
Buttermilk also makes cakes, cupcakes, pies, and more — check out the full menu here — and will take special orders for birthdays and other occasions. Look out for cooking classes to start up soon, as well. They’re open Tuesday-Friday 8am-7pm, Saturday 9am-6pm, and Sunday 9am-6pm, and can be reached at 347-987-3941 or info@buttermilkbakeshop.com.
