Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: February 4-7
Welcome to the weekend, which features many events: fantastic anniversaries, opera and beer, and some good ol’ green thumb advice. Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:
Not Quite Midnight: Janeane Garofalo
When: Thursday, February, 4, 7:30pm (doors) / 8:00pm (show)
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street (between 3rd and 4th Avenues)
What: Not Quite Midnight is both a late night talk show and standup comedy show. Hosts Courtney Maginnis and Chris Calogero introduce their favorite comedians for short performances, then take them to the couch to get to the bottom of their jokes. With Janeane Garofalo, and others.

This Used To Be My Studio: Paintings By Lance Rutledge
When: Thursdays and Fridays, 3pm-7pm, Saturdays and Sundays, 11am-7pm
Where: Gowanus Souvenir Shop, 543 Union Street (the entrance is on Nevins Street, and down the alley, and on the left)
What: The recently opened Gowanus Souvenir Shop presents a show that features a small selection of Lance Rutledge’s paintings from the past 25 years, some created in the Souvenir Shop space itself. The newest piece is Canal No. 5, a painting made specifically for the Gowanus Souvenir Shop, which can also be purchased as a limited edition postcard and tote. The show will be on view through February 21.

Freddy’s 5-Year Anniversary Relocation Party

What: Bands Les Sans Culottes and Sweet Tits. Sounds Like a Porno double feature…well, perhaps it is…?
Opera on Tap: The Relationships Show
When: Friday, February 5, 8:00pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: Relationships, huh? We look for the perfect someone, we believe the fairy tale, we dream that it will all fall into place and bliss will follow. Sometimes it works out like that, sometimes …not. In this month of cupid, chocolates, flowers, and St. Valentine, the New Brew crew explores what can happen when boy meets girl meets boy meets boy meets girl…well, you get the picture. Falling in (and out) of love will be Anne Hiatt, Kamala Sankaram, Krista Wozniak, David Gordon, and Seth Gilman, with guest artist Matthew Yohn (noted sex-researcher…wait, wait, make that: noted baritone). Marriage counseling (and piano accompaniment) provided by Chris Berg.

Paddy’s Irish Music Sessions

What: Irish Music Sessions features musician Sean McNally.

Fred Bendheim: A Retrospective On The Theme Of Water
When: Through Sunday, February 14, Thursdays and Fridays, 4:00-7:00pm; Saturdays and Sundays, 11:00am-7:00pm
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: This will be Bendheim’s second solo show at 440 Gallery and his first retrospective exhibition. The show will include work from 1978 to the present, and will include paintings on canvas as well as the artist’s trademark work, shapings, shaped paintings on wood and pvc board and painted relief sculptures. The works on view will highlight the artist’s career and stylistic journey from early figurative paintings to his more recent abstractions. Water, in it’s many forms, is the unifying theme of the works.

House of Wax: Anatomical, Pathological, and Ethnographic Waxworks from Castan’s Panopticum, Berlin, 1869-1922
When: Through Sunday, April 3. Thursdays-Sundays 12-6pm (open everyday except Tuesdays)
Where: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 3rd Avenue at 7th Street
What: House of Wax will exhibit a selection of waxworks once shown as part of Castan’s Berlin-based Panopticum (1869-1922). The full collection, never before exhibited in the US, will later be installed at the forthcoming Alamo Drafthouse in Downtown Brooklyn.
How much: Regular admission fees: Admission to the exhibition & library is $5. Seniors and students are $3, and children 12 and under are free.
Park Slope Library Kids’s Book Fest
When: Saturday, February 6, at 11am-3pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: The day will include various events for all ages, including an ongoing bake sale to support the Park Slope Library and a special craft. Bring your gently-used children’s books (ages 0-8) for donation to Literacy Inc NYC.
11th Annual Seed Celebration & Swap
When: Saturday, February 6, 10am-3pm
Where: The Old Stone House, 336 3rd Street (between 4th and 5th Avenues)
What: This annual event brings together gardeners of all stripes to engage in the traditional activity of trading seeds. Our seed heritage is as old as our love of great food and Brooklyn gardeners are savvy to the benefits of top quality, organic seeds. Heirloom varieties of tomatoes, lettuce, and root crops as well as more esoteric and ethnically diverse items such as asian greens and amaranth will be featured. The beautifully packaged Hudson Valley Seed Library seed will be available for purchase as well as selections from Fedco’s politically correct line of non-GMO seeds. Treasures from the Old Stone House gardens will include native flowers that support bees and butterflies. Demonstrations on starting seed and transplanting seedlings, sprouting greens, seed cleaning, making seed balls, and how to make compost will be running at tables throughout this event. Plenty of gardeners will be available to answer your garden questions.This event is suitable for both children and adults.
Concerts on the Slope Presents: Tasveer and Quarter at the End of Time
When: Sunday, February 7 at 2pm
Where: St. John’s Episcopal Church, 139 St. John’s Place at 7th Avenue
What: With Sheng Ching Hsu, Violin, Mark Dover, Clarinet, Benjamin Larsen, Cello, and Daniel Epstein, Piano
How much: Free will donation.
Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea at Industry City
When: Saturday, February 6 and Sunday,February 7, 10am-6pm
Where: Industry City, 241 37th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
What: Smorgasburg has moved down to the booming Industry City, which may be new territory for you. While the move was announced some time ago, Industry City is housing both Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea every Saturday and Sunday until March 27, 2016. Keep in mind that Industry City is big — the entrance address is 241 37th Street. This is just two blocks from the 36th Street D/N/R subway station—only two stops from Manhattan on the D train!—and a short walk from the B35, B38 and B70 bus stops. The 39th Street exit off the Gowanus Expressway/BQE also takes you pretty much to their doorstep (and to the second-busiest Costco in America next door).
Sunday Colloquy: But Some Are Brave, with Jone Johnson Lewis
When: Sunday, February 7, 11am-12:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West at 2nd Street
What: The title’s from a quote about attempts to make history more inclusive: “All the women were white, all the Blacks were men, but some of us were brave.” The tendency in Women’s History Month is to talk about white women, the tendency in Black History Month is to talk about the men of Black history. This Sunday, we’ll hear about some of the African American women we might consider Ethical Heroes, role models for all of us who are interested in personal growth and social justice. Leader Jone Johnson Lewis will share a bit about some of the African American women from history who’ve inspired her, and who are sadly not all that well-known.
