Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: April 1-3
Garden of Delights
Carlton Scott Sturgill’s Garden of Delights is on view at Gowanus Loft through Sunday, April 10. The opening reception is tonight at 6pm.

Welcome to the weekend, which features many events: a garden of delights, a Shakespeare-a-thon, and gallery openings! Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:

Shakespeare-A-Thon presented by The Gallery Players, South Brooklyn Shakespeare, and The Rogue and Peasant Players.
When: Friday, April 1 – Sunday, April 3, see schedule for exact times and readings.
Where: The Gallery Players, 199 14th Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues)
What: Player’s Shakespeare, a multi-tiered arm of Gallery Players, in collaboration with South Brooklyn Shakespeare and Rogues & Peasants, offers a celebratory reading of the entire Shakespeare Canon along with the opening of Player’s Shakespeare-Studio to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the death of The Bard. This History plays will be read this weekend.

Ellen Chuse: Theme and Variations
When: Thursdays and Fridays, 4:00-7:00pm; Saturdays and Sundays, 11:00am-7:00pm. Through Sunday, April 24
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: Ellen Chuse’s fifth solo show at 440 Gallery, Theme and Variations, reflects an exploration of hyper-saturated color along with natural forms that have been part of the artist’s vocabulary for decades. Moving between representation and abstraction, Chuse explores landscape and the body in deeply intimate ways all while creating an ambiguity that encourages the viewer to bring personal associations and experiences to each piece.

Carlton Scott Sturgill’s Garden of Delights — Installation Opening
When: Friday, April 1, 6pm-9pm opening. Show continues throughout Sunday, April 10 by appointment only.
Where: Gowanus Loft, 61 9th Street #C8 (between 2nd Avenue and the Gowanus Canal.
What: Garden of Delights is a stunning exhibit by New Orleans by way of Brooklyn artist Carlton Scott Sturgill. The work is diverse and challenging, created with paint chips including mosaics, paintings & sculpture. Curation & lighting design by George Del Barrio.

The Slackers
When: Saturday, April 2, Doors: 8pm and Show: 9pm
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
What: The Slackers are the self styled masters of ska, reggae, soul, and rock n roll and are from New York City. With The Far East, The Ladrones, DJ Grace of Spades

Opening Reception for Hai: Sole Exchange
When:  Saturday, April 2 at 9pm. Regular hours: Thursdays-Saturdays, 2pm-6pm. Through April 29
Where: Open Source Gallery, (306 17th Street at 6th Avenue)
What: Healing Arts Initiative and Open Source Gallery present Sole Exchange, a participatory art installation curated by Francis Palazzolo. Sole Exchange explores the intersection between live performance and representational form, utilizing social practices that enhance intersubjectivity. Paintings and drawings by HAI studio members included in Sole Exchange aim to disrupt cultural polarization and destigmatize mental health issues. Participation in this exhibit not only makes the viewer an active participant, helping to increase understanding between individuals, but also increases the visibility of the HAI studio members. To negotiate unspoken and unrealized spaces between people, HAI studio members pictured kinship upon the Open Source walls, creating artwork for the exhibit that explores collaboration and community. Exhibited work validates the input of marginalized communities and encourages a position of strength and stability for the artists.

House of Wax: Anatomical, Pathological, and Ethnographic Waxworks from Castan’s Panopticum, Berlin, 1869-1922
When:  Through May 30. Thursdays-Sundays 12-6pm (open everyday except Tuesdays)
Where: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 3rd Avenue at 7th Street
What: House of Wax will exhibit a selection of waxworks once shown as part of Castan’s Berlin-based Panopticum (1869-1922). The full collection, never before exhibited in the US, will later be installed at the forthcoming Alamo Drafthouse in Downtown Brooklyn.
How much: Regular admission fees: Admission to the exhibition & library is $5. Seniors and students are $3, and children 12 and under are free.

Gowanus Waters: An Exhibition by Steven Hirsch
When: Through April 3. Regular hours, Thursdays and Fridays, 3pm-7pm, Saturdays and Sundays, 11am-7pm. Through April 3.
Where: Gowanus Souvenir Shop, 543 Union Street (the entrance is on Nevins Street, and down the alley, and on the left)
What: Gowanus Waters is the result of Hirsch’s multi-year effort to capture the Gowanus Canal’s toxic water surfaces and render them as abstract compositions. His painterly images swirl in a frenzy of elusive shapes and bright explosive colors. The result is a meditation on the sublime beauty and remarkable abstractions on the surface of the canal that remains fully aware of the noxious origin.

Smorgasburg at Prospect Park
When: Sunday, April 3, 10am-6pm [Note: This is the first weekend in Prospect Park]
Where: Prospect Park, Breeze Hill (Located near Lakeside and the Lincoln Road entrance)
What: After it’s cold weather tenure down at Industry, Smorgasburg begins its warm weather months in our beautiful backyard. Find 100 vendors and food from all over the world every Sunday at Breeze Hill, located near Lakeside and the park’s Lincoln Road entrance.  Find the market on Google Maps here. Presented in partnership with Prospect Park Alliance. Dog friendly.

Prospect Park Opening Weekend
When: Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3, See below for details
Where: Prospect Park, various locations
What: Join the Prospect Park Alliance for Opening Weekend in Prospect Park on April 2 + 3, with food, festivities and family fun. Here are some of the events:

  • Opening Day Parade, 10–10:30 am (Saturday only)
    Parade begins at 7th Avenue + 2nd Street, Free
    Join the Prospect Park Alliance and the Prospect Park Baseball Association to celebrate the start of the baseball season. Over 1,000 players will parade down 7th Avenue, led by local marching bands and civic leaders, to the Long Meadow Ball Fields, where a ceremonial first pitch will mark the start of the season.
  • Nature Exploration, 10 am–1 pm
    Prospect Park Audubon Center, Free
    The Prospect Park Alliance invites you to get inspired by nature with outdoor, nature play activities, bird watching walks and our new Discovery Packs, a ready-to-go kits filled with nature activities for families.
  • Spring Sprouts, 2–4 pm
    Lefferts Historic House, $3 suggested donation
    It’s time for spring planting! Join the Prospect Park Alliance at Lefferts Historic House where you help plant our crop of flax and make a small pot out of newspaper, fill it with soil and plant an herb seed to take home.

Taste of Fifth
When: Wednesday, April 6, 6:30pm
Where: Grand Prospect Hall, 263 Prospect Avenue (near 5th Avenue)
What: Celebrate Fifth Avenue’s acclaimed destination restaurants and legendary watering holes at A Taste Of Fifth at The Grand Prospect Hall. Buying a ticket not only allows you to sample all the savory offerings from our many local restaurants and bars (complementary wine & beer), but you’ll also be benefiting many of our local charities. A Taste of Fifth is a great opportunity to dance the night away or simply enjoy the company of friends and neighbors and catch up on the latest doings on the greatest avenue in the Slope.
