Assemblyman Peter Abbate held a private ceremony with Detective Wenjian Liu’s widow and parents today to present a resolution in recognition of the slain detective’s sacrifice, courage, and service to the community.

The resolution, which was passed on March 3rd and was sponsored by Abbate, pays tribute to Detective Liu’s life and is a testament to the outpouring of support from across New York State towards the victim’s family.

“The family’s courage through this ordeal has been an inspiration to all of us,” said Abbate. “We must continue to provide them with the support they need as they continue to work through their grief. As someone who has spent their career helping police officers and their families, I know how important it is to extend a hand to those who have lost a member of their family and continue to show we are one City and one state in solidarity behind them.”

After the brief service, Detective Liu’s father Wei Tang Liu thanked Assemblyman Abbate and the officers who showed up to pay their respects to his son.

The event was attended by Councilman Carlos Menchaca, NYPD Assistant Chief Steven Powers, Deputy Chief Charles Scholl, and 84 Precinct’s Captain Sergio Centa, and other NYPD officials.

Detective Liu was assassinated in his patrol car, along with his partner Detective Rafael Ramos, outside a Brooklyn housing project on December 20.
