Sheepshead’s Accused Cop Shooter Says Police Fired First
The man accused of shooting four NYPD officers at his Nostrand Avenue apartment is looking to justify his actions by arguing that the cops fired first.
Nakwon Foxworth, 35 is facing attempted murder charges for the April 8, 2012, shooting at 3301 Nostrand Avenue that left four cops hospitalized. Foxworth barricaded himself in his apartment with his pregnant girlfriend and infant son, who escaped the apartment moments before members of the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit barged in.
According to Foxworth’s defense attorney, the ex-con fired his shots only after the officers opened fire on him.
“They shot first. They had no reason to go in at that time because there was no one else in the apartment besides him,” defense attorney Damien Brown argued, according to the Post.
The prosecution isn’t buying it, and said a slew of text messages Foxworth sent moments before the shooting prove his intent.
The text messages depict a person prepared to do anything to avoid going back to prison, according to prosecutors, with messages including “Yo homie I ain’t going back behind that wallman. F– this,” and “They’re at my door. They’re scheming on me,” sent moments before police barged in.
Foxworth polished off a 10-year stint behind bars for drugs and weapons charges in 2009, and had previously done time as a juvenile on an attempted murder charge.
Foxworth left four officers – Captain Al Pizzano, Detective Kenneth Ayala, Detective Michael Keenan and Officer Matthew Granahan – wounded before he was taken down with a bullet to the abdomen.
Ayala was credited with saving the lives of his colleagues when he protected them with a bulletproof shield despite having been shot multiple times in the legs.
Ayala, Keenan and Granahan were promoted for taking Foxworth down.
