Sheepshead Bay Sees Safest Summer on Record

The 61st Police Precinct Community Council honored seven members of our neighborhood’s police force for work well performed.

Members of two crews were named “Cops of the Month” at the council’s first meeting after summer haitus. Captain George Mastrokostas pointed to officers Eddie Vargas, Sean Carlton, Katie Coyle, Suzanne Taha, Matt Perrone, Joe Breder and Sergeant Sal Carolla for exceptional service to the community.

Vargas and Carlton apprehended a gunman wanted for opening fire on a group of people in July at the Sheepshead/Nostrand Houses. They spotted and pursued the suspect on August 31 during a neighborhood patrol. He currently faces attempted murder charges.The remaining officers caught a thief who mugged a livery cab driver in the precinct.

Captain George Mastrokostas also noted that this has been one of the safest summers on record, and NYPD CompStat statistics indicate that crime fell by 24 percent. Robberies dropped by 36 percent.
