Share What You’d Like To See In Gowanus In Upcoming Community Planning Process

Got an idea for the future of the Gowanus neighborhood? You’ll have a chance to share them when several local leaders come together for Bridging Gowanus, a community planning process that launches next month.

Council Member Brad Lander, Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, State Senator Velmanette Montgomery, Assemblywoman Joan Millman, and Council Member Stephen Levin are convening the inclusive, community-driven planning process, which will be facilitated by the Pratt Center for Community Development. The final blueprint will be shaped through community input at meetings this winter and spring.

The first meeting will be Monday, December 9 from 6:30-8:30pm at PS 372, The Children’s School, 512 Carroll Street, between 3rd and 4th Avenues.

The goals of this project are:

• Bring community stakeholders together to build as much consensus as we can around a long-term vision for the Gowanus Canal area

• Identify broadly-shared community goals

• Create a space for honest conversation about different viewpoints

• Develop the outlines of a comprehensive, community-based infrastructure & land-use plan for a safe, vibrant, and sustainable Gowanus area

• Shape the next NYC mayoral administration’s thinking about the Gowanus Canal

“Bridging Gowanus will bring together a wide range of viewpoints to identify broadly-shared goals, engage in honest conversation about different viewpoints, and build as much as consensus as we can around a long-term vision for the canal area,” said Council Member Lander. “The future of the Gowanus area is being set. Let’s come together as a community and ensure that our vision is at the center of the discussion.”
