Sergeant Commits Suicide Across From 66th Precinct Station House

An as-yet unnamed sergeant shot and killed himself in his car on 16th Avenue near 59th Street at about 7:30pm last night, according to the Daily News. The paper reports the sergeant and soon to-be-detective, who was transferred from the 78th Precinct to the 66th within the past several days, fired at least one round into his head–although a witness at the scene reports hearing two shots fired. Reports initially surfaced on Twitter shortly after the incident.

The sergeant’s car, which was parked across the street from the 66th Precinct station house, was quickly obscured from view by official police vehicles. One shocked source told the Daily News, “People always say, ‘The signs, the signs,’ but there were no signs.”

Update: The New York Post says the officer had just made a robbery arrest, and told his colleagues he was going downstairs to get something and would return shortly. About a half hour later when he hadn’t returned, he was discovered deceased in his car.

Our thoughts are with the sergeant’s friends and family at this time.
