See Illuminated Art Installation Honoring BRIC’s 40th Anniversary At Prospect Park

PROSPECT PARK – In honor of BRIC‘s 40-year milestone, the media organization commissioned the New York-based Peruvian artist Grimanesa Amorós to create a monumental light installation.

Inspired by the shape of Prospect Park’s Bandshell and the beauty of the park’s greenery, HEDERA, which means “ivy” in Latin, stands 40 feet high and consists of a canopy of swirling and pulsating red and white LED tubes that “both cover the structure and create an immersive environment” for visitors who can walk around or underneath the vibrant work or admire it during one of the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! concerts staged at the nearby Bandshell.

Visitors who enter HEDERA will be greeted by their own reflections from the above cupola. At the center of the work will be smaller illuminated orbs resembling the central bud of a plant—reflective shadows will make them appear to blossom.

Amorós is an interdisciplinary artist who researches the history, area, and community of each of her installation sites before creating her works “through an organic and instinctive process.” She incorporates sculpture, lighting, technology, and video in creating her site-specific light installations that engage their surrounding architecture and community.

Prior to Saturday’s Fischerspooner/Xeno & Oaklander/Juliana Huxtable show, BRIC will host a special artist reception for Amorós at 6pm. Attendees will be treated to a brief conversation with Amorós led by BRIC’s Vice President of Contemporary Art, Elizabeth Ferrer. Amorós will also answer questions from the audience. There will be a cash bar at the Bandshell and attendees will be able to join in a toast with the artist while DJ Juliana Huxtable keeps the party atmosphere going.

HEDERA by Grimanesa Amorós will be on display at the Prospect Park Bandshell (Prospect Park West & 9th Street) from Tuesday, June 5 through Saturday, August 11. Learn more at bricartsmedia.org.
