Second Sheepshead Stroll Caps Off Summer Festivities [Photos]
Whereas the first Sheepshead Summer Stroll ushered in the summer in June, this second one, held this past Sunday, capped off the season.
Hosted by Empower Sheepshead and the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, and sponsored by Sheepshead Bites, Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz, and the Kings Bay Y, the Sheepshead Summer Stroll closes down Sheepshead Bay Road to traffic and allows businesses to turn their storefronts inside-out for shopping, dining and entertaining – and a bunch of family friendly activities.Jimmy’s Famous Heros brought back their hero eating contest.
The first place winner, Wayne Algenio, smashed previous records, scoffing down 2.17 pounds of sandwich in just under six and a half minutes.
You can see Algenio’s victory face above. Here was his technique: douse the sandwich in water, rip it apart, and squeeze it into little disgusting balls to shove in his face-hole.
See? Victory, people. It’s the only thing that matters.
Jimmy’s proprietor Victor Spadaro presided over the event, and doled out $100 cash to the champ.
Here’s Spadaro with second place winner Markin De La Cruz, Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz, Algenio and third place winner Alex Tisch.
Jimmy’s wasn’t the only competitive eating contest on Sunday. Investor’s Bank teamed up with Glechik on a pelmeni eating contest.
Friend of the site Howard won first place. I don’t think he ever had pelmeni before Sunday.
Moving on from the food frenzy, there were tons of antique automobiles filling up the gap beneath the Belt Parkway overpass.
Is that Obama’s red Marxist-mobile?
The car above, strangely, was driven by a woman.
Kings Bay Y held a fencing demonstration…
… while T. Kang Taekwondo students showed off their moves.
Kings Bay Y also had free popcorn and other activities…
… like face painting.
Brainy Academy gave out temporary tattoos and had playsets to keep kids busy.
There were a couple of vendors to entice the children with toys and candy.
And adults with food and alcohol.
Because it’s election season and heaven forbid a community event occur without political squabbling, former mayoral candidate Erik Salgado, an Akselrod supporter, turned up to protest Cymbrowitz in front of his office.
He brought employees of Z Best Car Wash with him, who were upset about the assemblyman’s fight to have the Coney Island car wash closed down back in 2012.
Because I’d hate to leave you with a word about politicians, here’s a cute photo:
See you next year, Sheepshead Summer Stroll!
