Six-time Grammy Award winner John Legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inductee Aretha Franklin are scheduled to play at this year’s Asser-Levy Seaside Park Concert Series, the borough president announced at Sunday’s Israel Celebration.
John Legend is a contemporary R&B singer best known for hits including “Ordinary People” and “Used to Love U”. He’s also collaborated with numerous mega-stars such as Alicia Keys, Andre 3000 (OutKast), Jay-Z and Kanye West. His forthcoming album, Wake Up Sessions, is being produced by The Roots and is expected to be released in September. He’s appearing on the heels of a benefit concert in New Orleans to raise funds for the Gulf region.
Eighteen-time Grammy Award recipient Aretha Franklin is a soul icon, with unforgettable hits like “Respect” and “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)”. Franklin is the first female artist to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and was also the only featured singer at the 2009 presidential inauguration for Barack Obama.
The “Queen of Soul” and John Legend will headline on different nights.
Markowitz made the announcement during statements at the Israel Celebration on Sunday. He also confirmed the schedule we’ve already posted, and added a few more that we’ll publish tomorrow. All in all, we should have the entire schedule except Latin night announced tomorrow. Stay tuned!
