The Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket will once again be the site of a fish fight as the 5th Annual Seafood Throwdown commences on Saturday, July 12 from 11am to 1pm. Hosted by the Greenmarket and the Northeast Atlantic Marine Alliance, this year pits Cheryl Smith of Cheryl’s Global Soul against Shanna Pacifico of Pacifico’s Fine Foods in the Iron Chef-style battle.

A veteran of the competition, Cheryl will try to defend her 2012 title against first-timer Shanna in this heart-pounding race to transform a secret seafood ingredient into a culinary masterpiece using other seasonal foods from the market.

We don’t know which team will take home the goldfish, but we do know this is a golden opportunity to get some cooking tips, recipe ideas, and some great information about local seafood.

Judging the competition will be Blue Moon Fish’s Stephanie Villani; Park Slope neighbor Michael Crocker, author of Sharing the Ocean; and Anthony Fassio of Slow Food NYC. Chef Emily Peterson of Heritage Radio Network will give onlookers a play-by-play of the action as she emcees the competition.

Inspired? Pick up some Blue Moon fish at Saturday’s market for a private Throwdown of your own.
