Last night was the grand opening of Brooklyn Eats on Myrtle, the avenue’s new bar/restaurant/ping pong hall from Energy Fuel‘s Paul Perez Sr,  Chance 11‘s Keith Gladding, Paul Perez Jr, and Carmen Nunez. 500 or so guests RSVP’d to the event, and we think we probably saw most of them–the space was already packed when we arrived, and somehow even moreso when we left.

A large waitstaff tended to revelers, who divided their time between the restaurant’s wraparound bar, café style seating, and ping pong room, where the games looked to be getting pretty intense.

“We’re taking Myrtle Avenue and bringing it inside,” said Carmen of the restaurant’s warm, Brooklyn-centric decor, including mounted photographs of the Myrtle of yesteryear. In fact, one of the only major non borough-specific pieces in the establishment is this very large, very patriotic plea for ping pong players. Ping-triotic?

We snacked on BE Chef Tim Coughlan‘s sliders ($3 each or five for $12), which come in classic,  sausage, BLT, spicy bean and avocado-filled torta, and slaw-slathered “Carolina” versions, as well as nachos with house made chips ($9), and a cup of veggie chili ($5) that came highly-recommended–and was surprisingly tasty even to the one of us who doesn’t tend to go for chili at all.

We regret not trying Brooklyn Eats’ ribs, though, which we heard from multiple fellow diners were of the melt-in-your-mouth variety–so we expect to be back soon. Also on the menu were wings, burgers, and quesadillas, plus veggie options like hummus, fried chickpeas, and a Portabella sandwich, too.

Carmen told us preparations for the opening came down to the wire, but she was thrilled with the turnout and had faith the Brooklyn Eats staff was doing a great job hitting the ground running.

“This was more than I even expected,” said Paul Sr.
