Scenes From The Opening Of The Highbury Pub
Did you make it to The Highbury Pub (1002 Cortelyou Road on the corner of Coney Island Avenue) last night? Owner Jimmy Grimason was on hand, pouring drinks, chatting with neighbors, and cultivating exactly the kind of warm, welcoming environment promised in their signs.
The pub has 10 beers on tap ranging from $6-8, bottled and canned beer from $4-7, a large selection of liquor, and small wine and cocktail lists. Jimmy says the draught beers will rotate, but for now, his favorite might just be the Evil Twin Lil’ B Porter.
The High Berry and Gin Gimlet were each $9, as are the other cocktails available.
“I’ve gone to Sycamore and 773 Lounge for years,” says Jimmy, who currently lives in Park Slope but is hoping to move to Ditmas Park soon. “I love this neighborhood.” He says he wanted to bring another bar option to the area–specifically, one for soccer fans. “Soccer is getting more and more popular,” he says, “but there’s nowhere to watch it.”
Now, however, patrons will be able to watch games on the two large TVs at the pub, which is named after Highbury (or Arsenal) Stadium, which was built exactly 100 years ago and housed Arsenal Football Club until 2006. Jimmy says while the bar is a Brooklyn Arsenal supporters club, fans of other teams are certainly welcome–“Away fans welcome” is even written on the chalkboard wall at the back.
Jimmy plans to open from 5pm-2am on weekdays (and stay open until 4am on weekends), as well as from 7am on Saturdays and early on Sundays to watch morning matches.
Other odds and ends: the bar is cash only, Jimmy hopes to start serving pies this Saturday, and–strange as it might be to say–the bathroom is fantastic with its Playboy wallpaper and literal penny tile floor. But don’t trust us–stop by The Highbury Pub tonight or this weekend, and welcome Jimmy to the neighborhood yourself.
The Highbury Pub is located at 1002 Cortelyou Road (on the corner of Coney Island Avenue), and will be open 5pm-2am Monday-Thursday, 5pm-4am Friday, 7am-4am Saturday, and early Sundays until 2am.
