City officials are warning homeowners to beware of suspicious phone calls from scammers posing as Build it Back representatives.

The Department of Investigation and Build it Back were alerted to the scam, in which fraudsters claiming to represent the city’s housing recovery program ask homeowners for personal information, after two victims reported being targeted last week, according to a spokesperson for the Mayor’s Office.

“Build it Back and the Department of Investigation work together to combat fraud targeting our homeowners. The City takes these issues very seriously,” Amy Peterson, head of the Build it Back program said in a statement.

Homeowners who receive suspicious phone calls should report it to the New York City Department of Investigation’s Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fraud Hotline at 212-825-5959.
