This weekend, introduce your kids to some local heroes.

In honor of the 150th anniversary of the New York Fire Department [FDNY], firehouses across the city will open their doors to local families, offering them a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the daily lives and dangerous job of firefighters.

The free tours, which are available to wannabe firefighters of all ages, will take place on Saturday, May 2, in two time slots: 11am–1pm and 1pm–3pm.

Kids and adults alike will learn about fire safety, view demonstrations, explore FDNY careers, and more.

In honor of the FDNY’s milestone, the New York Daily News has a pretty dramatic photo series of New York fires and firefighters over the years which is worth checking out.

For more information about the open house or to locate your local firehouse, visit the Fire Department’s website.
