Sandwich Of The Week: Roast Beef From Bierkraft

We’ve taken a look at the neighborhood’s best sandwiches for picnics, and you already know our feelings on the giant heroes from M&S Prime Meats, but we’re always happy to try more. And since Brooklyn Magazine rounded up their 20 Best Sandwiches in 20 Brooklyn Neighborhoods recently — citing Meltkraft’s Melter Skelter as the top ‘wich in the Slope — we thought we’d take a moment to highlight an undersung sandwich spot that we keep coming back to.

Bierkraft (191 5th Avenue between Union and Berkeley) may be well known for its impressive (and sometimes overwhelming) beer selection, but next to the growler filling station you’ll find the food counter, where you can pick up charcuterie, snacks (though FIPS advises against the pickled eggs), and sandwiches. You can choose from their menu or design your own, and they all come with a bag of Zapp’s chips or fruit. Like the beers, the sandwiches are a little pricey at $12 plus tax, but they’re large and filling.

Pictured at the top is their roast beef sandwich, which comes with house made roast beef, cheddar cheese, mayo, tomato, onion, arugula, and a healthy dollop of horseradish. The beef is a good mix of fatty and lean, with a nice char on the edges, and it’s a good match to the crumbly cheddar (and the whole thing is a good paired with a hoppy fall ale). And we’re big fans of the bread, which doesn’t do that thing where it’s too crusty and rips apart the roof of your mouth — it’s soft without disappearing at the first bite, and it’s got some chew to it.

There’s some seating inside, but you should get out and enjoy the backyard while the weather still permits. And if you stop by on Tuesdays at 7pm, you’ll get free sips and nibbles as they bring out their weekly tastings.

So, if you were to pick the best sandwich in Park Slope, where would it come from? Any tips on sandwiches we need to try next?
