Reminder: Deadline Approaching To Apply To Join Community And School Boards

This is just a reminder to get in your applications for Community Board 2 and Community Education Council District 13!

As mentioned last month, joining these organizations is your opportunity to play a role in local community government and local school district discussions, respectively. And for the first time, teens 16 years old or older can also apply, as long as they live within CB 2’s coverage area, which includes Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Wallabout, DUMBO, Downtown Brooklyn, or Brooklyn Heights.

The deadline for CB 2 applications — which must be notarized and submitted to Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams’ office at Borough Hall — is this coming Sunday, February 15.

Community Boards meet monthly and discuss everything from overflowing trash bins to potholes and liquor license renewals to city plans to reroute traffic. The local boards don’t have official say, but they do carry the power of public opinion and can make recommendations to city agencies.

For more information about Community Boards please visit here. Visit the Brooklyn Borough President’s website and download the Community Board Application here. Take the hour to fill it out and send it in.

Similarly, if you have a child in public schools and want to take a more active role in making sure their needs and the needs of their classmates are represented, consider joining Community Education Council District 13‘s board.

Education Councils offer parents an opportunity for District and Citywide Leadership with a strong voice in education policy. Attendees will learn about education councils and how to get involved in the elections.

  • If you are a parent interested in serving as part of a Community or Citywide Education Council, you should attend.
  • Community organizations and advocates will also learn how they can inform their constituents about this leadership opportunity.
