WILLIAMSBURG – A new design for the old Domino Sugar Factory Refinery was approved without changes yesterday by the Landmark Preservation Commission.

Developed by Two Trees Management company and designed by PAU Architecture, the building at 292 Kent will be a dramatic addition to the Williamsburg waterfront, housing offices in the shell of the old sugar factory’s facade.

Originally, the group intended to build offices into the existing facade, but will now create a glass office building within the brick shell of the historical refinery building. An enormous barrel-vaulted glass roof will soar over the old smoke stacks atop the factory.

A presentation citing a 2015 masonry study,  which stated that the historical brick was in good condition and would be cleaned, was submitted to the commission in advance of yesterday’s hearing, reported Brownstoner.

Plans for the building include an open, public lobby at the base of the building and a waterfront promenade.
