Question of the Week: Overtime for Nannies?

The New York Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights went into effect in 2010, but are people following it when they’re hiring nannies?

In an article for The Nation, neighbor Sharon Lerner takes a look at the scene in Park Slope, referencing the most recent Park Slope Parents Nanny Compensation Survey and noting that only 15% of respondents pay their nannies the required overtime rates, and that 44% paid no overtime at all. Speaking to an attorney who works in a legal clinic for domestic workers, she learns that “overtime abuses are rampant,” and explains that enforcement of the new law is difficult.

So, if you have a nanny, do you pay overtime?
