Purse Bid For Malignaggi-Senchenko Bout Today
Bensonhurst native, Giants fan and trash-talking pugilist Paulie Malignaggi was on hand at Candlestick Park last Sunday to witness the Giants beat the 49ers in overtime, but that’s not the only reason he had an enjoyable weekend.
Last Thursday, Malignaggi had a chance to meet with his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, who told the young boxer some things he’s been wanting to hear concerning his career – including a shot at the welterweight title, writes ESPN’s NYFightsBlog.
“I left the meeting feeling a lot better than I felt going in to it,” Malignaggi (age 31; 30-4 with 6 KOs) said. “I feel like there are a lot more possibilities than before.”
According to the report, a purse bid for the rights to put on a much anticipated match up between Malignaggi and WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko should take place today.
De La Hoya had also assured Malignaggi, who relayed the conversation to sportswriter Michael Woods, that there was a “strong possibility” that the fight would take place on American soil.
As always, Malignaggi had to add his own two cents.
“I think that fight would take place within ninety days of the purse bid,” Malignaggi said. “Yeah, if Golden Boy wins the bid, the fight would take place in the United States, no doubt. Mr. Senchenko would have to come out of hiding.”
