Vandalism in Prospect Park? Photos Show Smashed Lights and Fences

PROSPECT PARK – In what appears to be an act of vandalism, streetlights were smashed and fences were broken along a pathway in Prospect Park over the weekend.

A reader and his wife, both Park Slope residents, snapped the photos Monday morning while walking in the park, heading towards the dog beach from Prospect Park Southwest. The damage appeared to be concentrated along the southern part of the Long Meadow Ballfields, said the reader.

The extent of the apparent vandalism was described as about 5 broken lamps, a fence broken at multiple locations, trash strewn across the grass, and a trash can upended on top of a light post.

Inquiries made to the NYPD revealed no police reports filed due to the incidents.

UPDATE (2/7/18): A spokesperson for the NYC Park Department confirmed that Parks personnel have repaired the fences and cleaned up trash in the area. A call was made by NYC Parks to the Department of Transportation to request repairs for the lights. So far, the DOT has not responded to BKLYNER’s inquiries regarding a time frame for repairing the damaged light fixtures.
