Man Beaten to Death in Downtown Homeless Shelter
DOWNTOWN – A 64-year old man was beaten to death in a homeless shelter in Downtown Brooklyn in the early hours of Monday morning, police confirmed today.
Around 12:30 am on Monday, August 6, police received a 911 call of an assault inside a homeless shelter at Prince and Tillary Streets—directly across from the 84th Police Precinct building.
Despite the proximity of the building, call of an assault wasn’t an emergency, an NYPD spokesperson said, which meant officers from the 88th Precinct responded. Prince Street is the dividing line between the 84 and 88 Precincts, and on the east side of the street, the shelter is under their jurisdiction.
Arriving at the scene, police officers found the 64-year old victim with trauma to his body. The man was rushed by EMS to Brooklyn Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, the NYPD confirmed.
Officers were told that a 36-year old man had beaten the older victim repeatedly, causing the trauma to his body. Police took the suspect into custody at the scene with charges pending.
Because of the ongoing investigation, the name of the suspect in custody has not been released. The name of the victim has been withheld pending family notification.
